The rebate checks people are getting in the mail, is it tax free money?
Or do you have to claim it as income and get taxed on it?

Curious.
Additional Details
Judy, it was just passed.

Well obviously people answering that this money is tax free were not paying attention in 2001-2002...you get the rebate the first year, then you have to claim it as INCOME the following year. Essentially what is happening is the Government is giving you a REBATE on money that has been witheld from your pay check, therefore they are returning INCOME to you which while you won't be taxed from the check ($600 rebate = $600 check) next year when filling your taxes for 2008 (by April 2009) you WILL have to add the $600-1200 or however much you wind up getting to your total gross income in order to determine your gross income for 2008. Hope this helps...I've been through this the last time and am very much speaking from experience

Edit: Wow...posted for seconds and I've already got a thumbs down! LOL...I love idiots who are obviously clueless...yet insist they are correct....

It is a taxable part of your income. Some states are trying to pass laws that will not tax it on the 'State' side but it will still be taxable on the Federal side.

I will not claim it as tax money, Because I did not ask for it

As with the previous rebate check, a line will be added to the tax forms (1040, etc.) to account for the rebate. But this will effect the 2008 taxes (next year's form).

yay! it passed! it's tax free. you don't have to claim it. (i think)

Sugar Magnolia Says GO CHIEFS!
You will have to claim it on next year's taxes, so make sure to save some of it! I think they should pre-tax it for us, so we don't have to worry about it.

Yes, the house did pass it; however, the Senate has not and this is the problem. But, to answer your question - yes the money would be taxable (everything that comes into the home would be taxable) unless the stipulations state specifically that the money would be considered non-taxable. But, more than likely it will be taxable. Here is hoping the Senate can get their act together! :)

It isn't anything yet, nothing has been passed. Until it's passed there's no way to tell what the rules will be.
