This may seem like a stupid question, but how could somebody born and raised in this state have a wrong ss#?
I work in a job where all my patients/clients SS number is posted on their record. SS numbers vary by state and region. For example in the state I now live in, Louisisana, everybody's SS number begins with a 43-something, including my kids who were born here. My SS number begins with a 121, because I was born and worked in NY state before I moved to Louisiana. The SS numbers in California begin with a 5.
Every once in awhile I find someone in Louisiana that has a social security that is totally different from everybody's else. It happened again today. The guy had a 212 beginning SS number which I think is Mass or NJ or someplace up north. The guy insists he was born and raised here, and never worked anywhere else. How can that be?

maybe they were out of numbers for that year.

Nowadays, kids tend to get a social security number at a very early age, for use in bank accounts and such. But when I was young (a very long time ago, granted), you didn't get a social security card until you started working. So the number related to where you were living when you applied for a card, not where you were born.

Does this answer it? Actually, I liked the one about the witness protection program the best. Makes him sound mysterious!

Wow, I didn't realize that someone's SSN was regionally based. That's odd because I was born in PA, and raised in MD but my SSN isn't anywhere near anyone else's that I've met - neither in MD or PA (or DE for that matter) Go figure??
I suppose with it being a 9-digit number that would limit the number of people that could be born in any one area... maybe it's just coincidence and the numbers are just handed out in some sort of "order" rather than by region.

water_skipper
How old is he? If he's less than 32, maybe he was born in Louisiana but the people applying for his social security number had a mailing address in Maryland.

he is in the witness protection program where they give you a new identity and number...shhhhhhhhhh!

angela934
it doesn't matter where u were born. mine starts with a 5 and so does my younger sisters but my older sisters starts with a 4. we all were born in missouri and grew up here. my son's starts with something diff. too. he was born in missouri. so it's not where u were born.

Does it really matter?

extra_37
the numbers are assigned based on the region where you applied for it. Could be he was in the military and applied for it when he joined up.

Pobept
where he was born has little bearing on this SSN, where he was living when he applied for and received his SSN is what determines its issue state!

infidel
maybe he's in witness protection or something. the gov't can isue new ss#'s in certain cases.

Player
Maybe he was born in that state, but registered by parents on another state?
Can't tell you for sure...

i think someone is lying to you dear . a social security number does not indicate where you were born . you apply for it and it is federal . when someone dies that number is set aside for 10 years OR more and then reissued to a new person .I'm sure the gentleman you talk about knows where he was born . for instance in my family there are 201 ,, 194,, 296 ,,121 ,,, 202 ,,,181 and we were all born here in Pennsylvania

Not true...me and my brother were born in different states...2 years apart...and our first 3 digits are the same. Could have to do with my dad being in the military at the time. I don't know.

Jen
Maybe they ran out of 43- SS numbers.

bob the builder
out of numbers probably
