well i can hardly understand the tax talk. but i used to do it myself. now i'm marriend and dont know how more difficult it is. i'll probably try. the crappy thing is it sounds like i have to buy it every year. what a waste. wish i would buy it once then subscribe to get updates. |

I use turbotax... it is awesome. I simply use cheapest version (like 30 bucks). It asks you every single thing about the money you've made/spent over the year (mortgage interest, stock interest, daycare, real estate, income, everything). It is so thorough that it will definately take a while for you to accurately answer all the questions... You can easily save and come back later.
If your income is not too complicated (tons of investment property, retirement plans, gifts from family, gifts to family) turbotax is definately the way to go. Definately start with the cheapest, because if you begin to answer more complicated questions it will ask you to upgrade (i.e. how much did your business make this year). Start at cheapest and it will tell you that you have to upgrade if you are getting into more complicated stuff... pretty self-explanatory.
It is basically do-it-yourself HR Block... Only like 10% of the price.

Oh and it takes care of refunds and everything for you.... we got ours in like 3 or 4 weeks after filing. |

I've used them 3 out of the last 4 years.
They do update themselves, even after you install it, it keeps checking for updates to tax laws.
If your situation is simple, it's the way to go. If you have all kinds of deductions, you may want to use a tax advisor instead.

you have to buy a new one every year. there's no perfect one, but try to get what most applies to you. if your taxes are really simple, you might be able to do them for free online. h&r taxcut allows you to access a helpdesk of sorts but i didn't find that superbly helpful when i did it. there's nothing like a real person that you can sit across the desk from, so either of the softwares are really the same to me. |

These accounting companies have perpetuated a myth about how complicated it is to do your taxes. It's not. I'm not a genius or math-smart in any sort of way, and all I need to do my taxes is a pencil and a calculator.
It takes a little bit of reading, but if you have the internet and the booklet from the IRS, all the information you need is right in front of you.
The one caveat is if you have a business etc.... then it might be worth hiring an accountant.
Try this one year, do the taxes yourself and then use the software. If you come up with the same amount then you know that you don't need to buy software to do your taxes. |

It is okay. Taxcut is generally rated higher by Consumer Reports than Turbotax. Plus Taxcut is essentially what H&R Block uses. I've used the Taxcut Premium + State for years without any issues. |

The service is good, and gives you lots of hints on how to save money as you go. It also will import data from prior years, (if you used turbo tax) and import data from the big banks and investment companies, if you have all of your information and passwords.
Buy the minimum level package, WITH state. Everything else is a waste. That said, you can shop for incentives with different stores; sometimes you can get software that you want along with it for "free". Note, I've gotten Quicken at least twice, but never used it. |

I would suggest using www.taxact.com it is the same as turbotax but alot cheaper and is also verified and marketed by the IRS get all your taxes done and electronic filed for less than $20.00 and you can log back in next year and not have to retype all your personal information again for next years taxes |

I've used Turbo Tax since 1999, had Tax cut 2 years prior. I really like Turbo tax best, they update themself ONLY during the tax year you are using. You must buy one every year which is a crock but have to do it. The one to get depends on what it is you are doing, this year is my first Home/Business one so has taken a bit of getting use to, but it lets you go line by line. Prior was using the Deluxe, one thing I do hate is the cost of the program itself is high, and now they have increased the cost of EFiling again, which makes it rough on small refunds if you need it back quickly.
Now I have heard recently some very good things on the H&R Block one bit have never used the program, have used their services and never will again, felt I got a raw deal back then. But, the program sounds good. |
