punknart2 | Tv Licensing in the UK!! HELP ME!!? |
Hi, Im and international student and I dont know anything about this in the UK.
In the flat I rented there is a TV and I noticed there were channels available. I dont even watch TV, I just use my tv to play xbox 360,thats all, so I know that I dont need Tv licensing for these purposes.
I called TV Licensing, and were very rough with me, but basically they told me that if Im cought watching tv, I would have to pay 1000 pounds. This will no happen because I dont watch, so they told me I will receive a visit, whats this for? they didnt told me when!
Im worried!, someone know how is this? In this moment I unplugged the TV from the signal cable to prevent.
Somebody can explain me pleasE?
thanks Additional Details But, in the first visit if they find the tv signal I will have to pay the fine?? Or they just will say me that I need a TV licence and that I have to buy it as soon as possible? |

Do I need a TV Licence?
You need a TV Licence to use any television receiving equipment such as a TV set, digital box, DVD or video recorder, PC, laptop or mobile phone to watch or record television programmes as they're being shown on TV.
If you use a digital box with a hi-fi system or another device that can only be used to produce sounds and can't display TV programmes, and you don't install or use any other TV receiving equipment, you don't need a TV Licence.
I'm a tenant. Is it my responsibility to provide a TV Licence?
Yes. If you watch or record TV, it is your responsibility to make sure that your address is licensed.
What if my landlord provided the TV?
You are still responsible for making sure that the address is licensed. You should check with your landlord to see if it is licensed and, if it is not, whether you need to buy a licence.
If your lease clearly states that you are responsible for any necessary TV Licence, you need to buy one.

Get a license, regardless if you wathc Tv or not, it can get a Tv signal so you need one.
You can pay by Direct Debit every month. |

Watch it or not if in possession of anything that can receive tv images ,even a mobile phone the law says you must have a licence |

Okay here we go again.
There are people on this site that trot out the same lame crap everytime.
Simply, if you are the person responsible for the property by virtue of ownership, ownership by mortgage, private or council lease, private or council rent, and there is a television on the premises that can receive a TV signal, then you are liable to buy a TV licence. No excuses!
As for taking the ariel out, don't bother, that simply does not work, that is not the way a detector van works, if the TV works they pick it up, and should the van visit you, then you get the fine, even if you only use it for playing an X-box, it is still a working TV.
As for it not being fair, well life ain't fair, so get over it, and as you have spoken to the licensing people, they probably are already aware, especially if you phoned on a landline from the property itself.
As for getting rid of the TV, this may work, but technically as a previous poster said the Act of Parliament that governs TV licensing actually covers anything that can receive a broadcast signal, and as you can watch BBC on your PC, and listen to them on the Radio, guess what, they are covered to.
Pay mine by standing order just over £10 per month saves a lot of unnecessary hassle. I dont believe in taking on a battle I know I wouldn't win! |

why dont you play your x box through a monitor and tell the tv licence people you dont have tv.
you could get rid of the aerial from your tv. If somone visits your house they will try and find a signal, without an aerial you wont have one, problem solved. |

You need a licence if you have equipment that is capable of receiving a TV signal. |

Remove the TV, and probably also the aerial from your flat. Unfortunately in the UK, once a TV is registered at a property, anybody in that property is deemed to be able to watch TV. I've not put this to the test, but it strikes me that if you have no receiver (TV) in the property, should somebody come round to check, it will be obvious that you cannot be watching TV.
Otherwise you will be lumped in with everybody else who is trying to buck the system.
And if they catch you, you will be taken to Court unless you pay the fine - and it will be a fine. It's the one thing in the UK (apart from Council Tax) that you have no defence for if you are caught. |

Oh yes! If you say you have not got a licence then you will get a visit. You do not have to let them in but if you do not they will go away and get a warrant to search.
As others say it's having a TV that matters not that "You never watch it" or "don't watch BBC".
A friend had a Black and White TV and a video. As the video could receive colour he needed a Colour licence but only had B&W!
Although the courts can give a £1000 fine they very rarely do. A conditional discharge "get a licence and pay the arrears" is common |

When they visited me they told me that I only have to have something that can pick up a signal and I have to pay a licence. However I refuse to pay mine, for I hate companies that MAKE you do something like this. We only have a Licence anyway because of BBC1 and I don't watch that so I don't see why I should pay. Ok that is not so good on the eye of the law, but I just don't care!!
You can do what you need to do, but I would sooner pay a fine, but then I know I would not do that either. This country sucks where this 'no choice' is concerned. I choose not to pay, your choice is your own. Some people would buy a Black and White TV licience. I think it is wrong that they do this and I would just not ring them again and if they do come over show them how you use it, stand your ground and if you end up in court speak the truth!
Best of luck and welcome to the UK.. |
