That's about right you get 25% off being on your own. |

Yeah I think if you live on your own you get a 25% discount so that sounds about right. If you're band C you should be able to check the rate on your council's website. |

Single person discount is 25%. If it is a new build in a better area than your friends, it may get marked up. What bands are your friends houses in? |

Not sure, see if you can find out what your neighbours are paying and have a look on moneysaving expert.com as Martin Lewis has campaigned against Council Tax anomalies...and see if you are entitled to any council tax benefit...every little helps. |

I don't know if it goes on where you live, but I am in a 3 bed semi, all be it ex council. I pay far less than you, I pay 91.00. That's a lot you're paying at £130.00. Unless you pay extra for the council to do work (ie. road maintenance, lighting maintenance, gardening) in what is termed as a private area?
Move to somewhere nice and common like me!! We are classed as plebs even if we buy our houses, so they do stuff for us thinking we are really stupid. I let them think it, as I get my maintenance done for free. Stupid? I think not. Lol.
Without comparing with your neighbours or the terms of new build council tax in your area, it's hard to say. That does sound very steep though!
Merry Christmas. |

We are all paying too much because there is no control on what council officials award themselves in salaries year on year . they can get far more than the prime minister, and you are unable to complain
You would be truly shocked at their salaries and the massive pensions |

The council will probably be right. Council tax is based upon ratable values. On a new build you have a recent valuation. Most of the houses' that you refer to will have their rates based on a valuation that is many years out of date.
As a single occupier you get a 25% discount off the full rate. |

I feel for you. I paid £168 per month three years ago and I was the only person working. Now I live in a Council flat and I pay £100 per month. I don't work now, as I have had a heart-attack, but my husband does and he brings home less than £800 pm. Rent £400 Council Tax £100, add on electric, gas, telephone and still no help. I receive £75 pw. incapacity benefit. No chance of a job now 57 years old, educated, but scrapped. |

Council tax is calculated from the amount of non-exempt adults living at a property so it doesn't matter whether you are a couple or a family, anything above one adult is enough to pay 100%. If only one person lives there, they get a discount of 25% so you should be paying 75% of what you used to when there were two people. If your friends are paying less, it's because they're in a different band. Bands are calculated by how much your property was worth in the 60s so it's a bit difficult to judge but if you think you should be in a lower band, you can ask the council to come and reassess your property. |

council tax is done on the value of the house some point in the 1980's. Since your house is a new build it is being valued at its current sale market value hence your higher c/tax.. we are in a Victorian house and pay £117 p/m thats the government for you GREEDY!!! |

You only get a 1/4 off for being a single person which is quite unfair.
A single person should get 50% off really . Families with 6 kids (8people using council facilities, police, ambulance, fire brigade) get a right bargain on the old Poll Tax.
That's equality for you !
lol. More swindling by the Govt. |
