I was wondering if anybody has come through customs from Lanzarote and had cigarettes taken off them , but appealed and got them all back. I had 3000 taken off me ( i was not aware the limit was 200) There is an appeal system , but i think it is a waste of time. Any experts on this subject? |

We had a lot of tobacco taken off us coming back from Lanzarote. We'd bought the tobacco on a cruise ship and had been told that it was legal. We appealed but were told that there were sufficient notices and leaflets in the departure hall and we had no excuse. You would have been ok had you made your purchase in Madeira as it is part of the EU. otherwise the limit is 200. If you're on a tour or a cruise or something like that you can buy the 200 in a non EU country, and a further 3kilos (or equivalent) in a EU member state and bring home the lot - I have it in writing. |

The story that Sian tells is an urban myth; rubbish! All you are doing is importing slightly fewer cigarettes! It was the same with "opened bottles"
I cannot recall why but the Canaries are not part of the EU for some reason though they are - I think - Spanish and so the allowance is 200. There is an appeal system but what would your defence be? "You didn't know"? But ignorance is no excuse. I used to work in taht area and cannot recall anyone succeeding.
People travelling from the EU also have to show that it is for "personal use" and when they had many kilos in their car would have their cars seized too.... |

For future reference..........
I was told by somebody who did this, dont know how true it is but i do it just in case....
Buy as many cigarettes as you want, open every packet and take one cigatette out of the packet. IF you get stopped in customs they cant take them of you becuase each packet has been opened. |

Are you sure the limit is 200? I thought Lanzarote was in the European Union, that means the 200 restriction doesn't apply. |
