Phil McCracken | UK Should we INCREASE fuel tax? |
A journey from Wigan to Milton Keynes SHOULD take 2 hrs 45 mins, today the home leg took me a whopping 5 hours. Why do we tolerate congestion and consider it acceptable? Why is the "rush hour" lasting longer and longer? Why are motorways, supposed high speed routes, running to stand still?
Clearly £1/litre is not putting enough people off, maybe £2/litre would do the trick? Motorway tolls, fines for doing the school run, etc. Additional Details No it wouldn't have stopped my journey because I was transporting goods, so public transport was not an option for me. |

Yes, I'm thinking around £5 per litre at the pump, in conjunction with toll roads especially around schools, reducing motor traffic around schools making it safer for children whom will now commute to school via foot / bicycle.
Plus reducing speed limits in city's and built up areas (20mph) and enforcing the speed limits.
I too own a commercial van, who only drives when I have to carry a load that cant be taken by other transport. I turn down work that involves travelling more than 15 miles due to the time wasted travelling that distance.
The problem is people love their cars saying 'it gives them freedom' though in reality creates more traffic and takes away the freedom to live in a clean air city with safe roads for it's citizens.
Motoring is for the well off, most of the poor 3rd world don't have a car, unlike rich 1st worlds who often have two or more cars per family home.
With more expensive private motor transport, people will work closer to home or move within sensible distances of work / family etc. |

I don't think higher tax is the answer. This will just hit the poorer paid workers and single parent families. This would mean that the minimum wage would not be sufficient to justify travelling very far to find a job. If we are letting 3 million people into the country every year then we should expect at least 1 million extra cars on the roads. I'm not against immigrants it's simple maths.
The road system wasn't made to cope with the amount of traffic we have today - and there are roadworks everywhere! -I live Near Wigan and it's terrible! |

No, let's see some of the money that the Treasury has taken from the British tax payer in fuel duty over the last ten years actually being spent on improving public transport and maybe then you can talk about increasing fuel tax. You really don't have a clue, do you? Or are you saying that only the rich should be able to use the roads because that is ultimately what your proposal would achieve. Word of advice. Engage brain before typing next time, yes? |

Well i have to say that public transport is the issue here, now it is great in London, but outside it is just appalling. Not to mention the ludicrous cost and time of travel. A car travel from Slough to West Ruislip is about 20 minutes, now by bus, since busses were cut and now one bus does the job of about three, it takes an hour and a half, now i have to say this is completely unreasonable. |

ok, your telling me that a average family of 4 should have to get the bus or train, imagine trying to drag 2 kids with your, mine are aged 4 and 9 and trying to get to liverpool to see their granddad, or to chelmsford to see friends would be a nightmare with all the waiting around.
bus routes and train routes are not direct.
for example, my dad dont drive, so if he got the bus from loughborough to groby, he has to go via leicester, this takes over 4 hours to get 15 miles, my uncle can get here from chester in the car in half the time.
or if i have to get to work which is 7 miles away and in a small village which does not have a regular bus service, it would take me 3 hours due to indirect routes.
motorways only come to as standstill because people do not leave enough time, maybe they should have staggered work hours like they do on some big industrial estates so that the traffic is spread out more. |

Would that have stopped you doing your journey? I doubt it.
Pushing up fuel prices will just push people into smaller more economical cars. It won't get them off the roads.
The legacy of the car has meant that people now travel long distances from home to work. You can't just undo that overnight.
I think the first step would be to get rid of car tax and put the price of petrol up by an amount so Mr. Average ends up paying the same, but the 20 mile a week little old ladies pay less, and the 40,000 mile a year sales rep pays more accordingly.
It wouldn't reduce traffic, but it would make it fairer for all. That'd be the first step. Road pricing would have to follow if you want to reduce congestion. |

This must be the most selfish question I have ever read anywhere. You want everyone else off the road so that you can drive around unobstructed by the others in this world. It would probably be better if you gave up driving and let the rest of us get on with our lives in peace. |

what the hell every other tax has increased, |

No.
People do not buy cars so that they remain off the roads.
If they are priced off the roads then there will be no point in buying them and an industry will suffer and many jobs lost and the government will lose a huge amount of tax. Public transport cannot cope now with an infrastructure built for maybe 40 million people faced the prospect of 60 million plus and still rising. |
