US citizens: Would you support a penny tax on all drive-thru transactions?
I believe we have all thought to ourselves, If only I had a penny/nickel/dollar for every time...(insert phrase here.)

What if every time you hurriedly, or lazily, completed a transaction from your automobile at a fast food restaurant or dry cleaners you donated a penny to fight against our country's dependency on foreign oil. Imagine the capital that could be generated daily.

The proposed revenue would have to be earmarked for specific purposes, of course. How much additional funding could be generated for alternative energy research, and building of new infrastructure through such a simple, and insignificant tax? Would you support such a "convenience" tax that goes beyond current state and federal gasoline taxes?
Additional Details
Sunday, on CNN, I watched a segment dubbed "no child left inside." The subject was New Mexico's proposed 1% excise tax on televisions, personal computers, and gaming systems. The proceeds, estimated to be more than $5M annually, are to be used for school nutritional programs, after school activities, building/maintenance of parks, and youth public sports (Rec Dept.) programs.

Everyone, please, do the math. I used to work at a Mcdonald's for two years, and I am -downplaying- the sales we earned at our restaurant! $0.01 * 60 (The average OVER ALL amount of the total cars that go through the drive-thru every hour) times 18 hours which is how long they are open and close till. The other gentlemen was right, it amounts to about $10 per restaurant, per day. BUT, multiply that times 500, which is undoubtedly WAY LESS than the McDonald's in the United States ALONE!. That's 5,000 dollars everyday. And that is ONLY FOR MCDONALD'S ALONE. So then do the same to every other major fast food chain except halve the sales and add it all up together... P.S. I am sure Wendy's, Burger King and Taco Bell have 500 stores in the United states!

Burger King = $2,500
Wendy's = $2,500
McDonald's = $5,000
Taco Bell = $2,500
[Not to mention every other smaller Fast food restaurant like Arby's, Dunkin Donuts, etc...] You get $12,500 everyday. Come on, seriously? That system can't pay for itself? Sounds like a load of crap to me. Let's do more math.

$12,500 * 365 = 4, 562,500 DOLLARS, 4 MILLION DOLLARS!! Every year, just imagine what we could do with that money! Just take out 1 Million dollars for expenses to pay for the system which I am sure will cover it and guess what? We still have 3 Million to spend on helping in fighting cancer, new technology, military funds, oil prices, and more! Not only that but we can have the fast food restaurants handle most of it, so all we are really paying for is the collection and summing of the pennies. Nothing else! I TOTALLY Agree with this idea.

What's one penny? $4,562,500 dollars to me!

Sure, I might even go so far as to double my contribution. Oh the generosity.

I'd support a penny tax for every Yahoo question. (lol)

For Drive thru's I think a $5 tax would be more appropriate, not as a revenue raiser but to discourage drive thrus. In an age of "carbon-sensitivity" of our ecology, I can think of nothing that would be easier to achieve than to reduce emissions by turning off the car for 5 minutes instead of leaving it on while in line at the drive thru.

That sounds like a good idea. One penny itself won't buy you alot (or anything) but a penny goes a far way when millions of pennies are collected each day. I would support this. I don't see why people wouldn't mind 1 extra penny, for the good of the country.

I support.

fdm215
No but only because it would cost more than 1 penny per transaction to manage the program. I get the idea...create a tax similar to the extra taxes smoker pay for cigarettes or drinkers for alcohol. It's not a bad idea but would have to be applied more even-handedly to restaurants. It would also have to be worth the trouble of enacting and administering.

It depends on what the tax was for but then again me not having to get my behind out of the car and can still get what i wanted from a specific merchant is worth every penny(literally)

i dont think a penny would kill me , especially for something like that ! i think thats a great idea , you should run it by Hillary when she takes office

It wouldn't generate enough income to cover the cost of collection. The typical fast-food outlet handles 3 driveups per minute during the busy periods. That would raise less than $10 per day per McDonalds restaurant.

It's a great idea, as long as the money actually went to what it was intended. There would be a huge fight though, because there are a few in this country making a ton off our dependency on foreign oil, and they influence our politicians.

Yeah, sure... put it into anti-fatty programs for children!

Don't you understuand that we pay around half of everything we earn in taxes already? income tax, sales tax, gas tax, smokes/alky, tolls, the list goes on... how much friggin more do you want from us? How about we stop giving aid to foreign countries that hate us? How about stop giving money to schools that can only teach our youth how to become gang members? How about stopping the government from wasting time with bio fuels and solar, which will never provide more than a tenth of what our world needs, and use clean nuclear like France?

thats communist. why would you charge me for a drive-through when i'm already paying past the cheeks for gas. this tax would be unwarranted.
