Because the technical standard is different here - American DVDs won't play on many British players though you can buy players which will play the different format - they're more expensive to buy too. |

There are different playing regional codes, dvd's from different regions don't necessarily play on all players.
It can be expensive to ship goods from region to region.
Certain goods fall foul of import tax, especially items considered to be luxury, or in direct competition with products in the home region.
e.g. a hat costs £19 in the UK, a similar hat would cost £59 to import from the US, (luxury item, competes with UK manufactured hats, and shipping costs). |

it's called region 1 and region 2. usa is 1 europe is 2. just make sure your player handles the region code and you can play them |

I would have to say that it would have to do a lot with the law of Supply and Demand. in the US there is a huge Demand for DVD's, along with the fact that there is a huge population of consumers that will purchase them with in 1 to 2 years after being released into the marketplace.
Where as in the UK, there may not be that much of a Demand for all of the different types of DVD's.
You have to look at the cost of Transportation(fuel, labor, shipping crates, cutoms cost)
Then again, if you know for sure that there are alot of people in the UK that feel the same as yourself, you might want to look into opening up a DVD store. |
