Even if you are under 18 and/or in full time education you still need to pay tax and National Insurance.
However in practise this will not usually result in an actual tax liability unless your part time income is over £5,435 (about £105 a week) in a tax year. If this is right you shouldn't be paying tax but sometimes it does happen. You can write/call the Revenue, explain the situation and they should be able to help you out and make sure you are on the correct tax code. If not they will amend it and send it to your employer and you will get the tax back through your salary.
Alternatively you can view the tax as a kind of savings account and claim it back at the end of the tax year (ie: April 2009) which is often easier. I have always claimed tax back by writing a letter to the Revenue outlining what I've been paid (gross), how much tax i've paid and how much I should have paid and enclosed my P60 (you get this from your employer after the tax year end) and I've always got a cheque back reasonably quickly.
It is highly unlikely you can claim back any national insurance payments you have made as these are calculated in a weekyl /monthly basis. You will pay 11% on any weekly earnngs over £105. |

Your employer should do this for you, not you. I imagine you have paid 'emergency tax' as your emploer does not know which tax code to use for you, usually you get it back automatically in a few weeks. My daughter is doing her A levels and she does P/T work, she too paid emergency tax for the first couple of weeks and had to get her Employer to contact the tax office to sort it, they were using the wrong code. |

its normal when you first start work to pay a lot of tax as they issue you with a emergency tax code. after a couple of weeks you should get your tax code which indicates how much you can earn without paying tax and then via your wages you will get any overpayment back either by paying less tax that month or week or an actual refund. |

if you only have a part time job then you shouldn`t pay tax, it`s nothing to do with you being a student, this applies to everyone. |

At this stage in the financial year, you should not be on emergency code as your employer will know what your total income for the year is. Have you signed a P46 to say this is your only job? If not, ask your employer for one. If you have signed the form, ask your employer why you are paying tax. If your employer claims not to know, contact his tax office and get them to put him straight. |

It's not a problem. You need to get your P60 from your employer and then contact the tax office that deals with that company. They will require you to send your P60 and you will then get a refund. It happened to my daughter last year. |
