Speedious | Unemployed son over 24 years of age, can be claimed dependent or not? |
I have a son who became 24 in march of 2007. He was full time college student the whole year. He has $0 income in 2007. Therefore completely supported by me and my wife. Can I claim him as our dependent on 2007 tax return? |

Yes, you can.
When you pay for more than 50% of someone's living expenses, you can claim them.
Even if they don't live with you, are over 24... whatever. If you pay for more than 50%, the answer is yes. |

Yes, but not as a qualifying child any more. But since you provided over half of his support for the year, and his gross income was under $3400, you claim him as what's called a qualifying relative. You won't get $300 rebate for him though, since he's no longer a qualifying child. |

You can claim your son as a "qualifying relative" because of his age. In the relationship column on your income tax return you will write in "Other". |

Sure, we claimed our son until he finished school and got a job. The majority of his support was from us, he earned almost nothing. When he becomes self supporting, then you can't claim him. |
