Unpaid council tax?
about 5 years ago I lost my job and moved out from my flat into a friends place, it has just occoured to me that I had some council tax to pay but moved out beofore I paid it. I looked at the council's website (waltham forest) and they said they were taking a really tough line on non payers, prosicuting them were possible. I am now in work and can afford to pay, but I am frightened to approch them in case they prosicute and I end up with a record even a prison sentence, any advice will be warmly recieved.

If you feel really guilty about it, then 'phone them. There very unlikely to prosecute someone who wants to pay them money, especially as if it was 5 years ago they would have written it off as a bad debt.

If you don't feel guilty then let it go. If they haven't chased you down after all this time - they aren't going to.

They will not prosecute you, if you tell them exactly what you have said in your question. In fact they will possibly be so surprised that they have found someone who is honest, they will all need a day off to recuperate.!!
Don`t worry, you are being honest with them and offering to pay. Good luck.

Don't worry about it life's is too short. Even if you said nothing and they do catch up with you they are highly unlikely to prosecute as it costs even more tax payers money to do so, it's just an idle threat. They are more likely to discuss ways you could pay the debt off i.e in one go or a small monthly amount. They really really don't want to prosecute and will only do so if you refuse to pay!

explain the situation you were in,& tell them everything has changed for the better, there not as bad as they used to be,if they wanted to find you they would have done by now,you may have to pay it back, but only offer what you can afford,if you get no joy with them go to the C.A.B,good luck

OK lets just come down to reality you were unemployed which made you eligible for a council tax repayment so its maybe not as much as you think but as most council tax offices don't give F**** tough don't worry about it they will catch up with you eventually but if your willing to pay no worries no prosecution no prison sentence stop worrying about it me just been handed bill for £2000 when I wasn't even here ... am I worried no should be but life's to short don't care try getting blood from a stone need help with other social issues which they are obliged by law to provide but they say no so to h..... sue me

Michael H
They will not prosecute.

You may actually find it a bit frustrating because their records will be a mess and they might have difficulty taking the money off you if you volunteer it !

Thier clamp down will be targeted at persistant non-payers who have received many warnings.
