Kristin O | WHY DO I OWE on my 2007 tax return???? |
So, I've started my tax return for this year online. it says that i owe $87 to federal and i will get a state refund of $159 (GA). I have never paid before and im unsure why i will have to this year. It really doesn't make any sense. My Gross wages were $32806.69. federal withheld was 3133.17......i am single and have no children. my refunds in the past have been around $1000. last year i only made around $22000. |

Because your federal withholdings don't seem like they are enough taken out.. for federal, you should have claimed zero or 1 to have the maximum tax amount taken... and if you did.. then your company made the error.. making you still liable for paying taxes since you received the extra money throughout the year. Basically, you almost broke even with the money you received in your paychecks and the tax you owed at the end of the year. Check with your company to see if they made an error.. and make sure enough is taken out of 2008. |

Many people would regard your situation as perfect. When you get a refund, it means you lent money to the government interest free all year. In your situation, they lent you $87 interest free. Unfortunately, now you have to pay it off.
If you want a refund, you will need to adjust your W4. You are probably claiming 2 exemptions on your W4. If you move it down to 1, you will get a refund next year. The flip side is that your tax home pay will drop.

You owe. You didn't have enough withheld. As your income got higher, the tax bill got higher too.
If you used single/2 adjust it to single/1.
Remember the goal of withholding is to pay the tax bill, not guarantee a refund. |

what was on your W-4 for withholding exemptions? can't answer without knowing that info. - with that level of income and taxes, sounds like too many exemptions taken = you probably filed Single 2 or married 1 or something like that - for 2008 - change your W-4 to Single and 0 or 1 |

You're in a higher tax bracket because you made more money. And you only had less than 10% federal income tax withheld. But please, do not complain. You did it exactly right. Way to go!!!!! Good job!!! A perfect tax return is when you either get back or owe within $100. It just doesn't get any better than that. Otherwise you have given the IRS an interest free loan all year long. When you were getting back $1000 refund, you were letting the IRS keep $1000 and not pay you a dime interest on it. Do you know anyone who would loan you $1000 for a year and not charge you interest? If you would like to get a "refund" back at the end of the year, start taking $100 a month and put it into a CD. Then at the end of the year you will have $1200 PLUS Interest! Something you would not have gotten from the IRS if you overpaid them. Or if you want another way to save some on paying tax, put some money into an IRA or 401K. Again it's tax deferred, you're saving money AND you're making money on your money at the same time. Good job! |

For some reason, not enough was taken out.
Did you work multiple jobs at the same time this year? If you did, that's probably what happened. Each job would take out like they are your only job, since they wouldn't know about your other income, so they wouldn't take out nearly enough. |

I am in exactly the same boat. I made no changes to my W4 and have been employed with this company for over 2 years now. last year i got a return of around $500. This year i owe $84. i'm a bit pissed as well seeing as how i desperately needed the refund. |

Assuming you made no mistakes on your return, you have been slightly underwithholding. You can submit a revised W-4 to your employer that raises your withholding if you wish. |

THERE COULD BE SEVERAL FACTORS WHY YOU OWE SOME MONEY BACK THIS YEAR. 1. IT COULD BE THAT YOUR EMPLOYER ISN'T TAKING AS MUCH FEDERAL TAXES OUT OF YOUR CHECK WHEN THEY SHOULD HAVE SO THAT CAN REALLY BE A MAJOR REASON WHY YOU HAVE TO OWE MONEY BACK. |
