Turbo Tax DID NOT mess up your taxes. There are 2 possibilities:
1) You gave Turbo Tax bad or incomplete information. If that is the case, YOU are entirely at fault.
2) The state of MD has bad information. You need to ask them how they arrived at the $800 amount. If they are showing income in your name that you did not report, they will recompute your taxes and send a bill. |

Something isn't right here - on an income of $14K for the year your total state tax in MD wouldn't have been $800 even if you hadn't filed, although penalties could have boosted it that high by now.
You didn't say what the letter said about WHY you owe that money - nobody can really help you without that info, so please add that info. Are they saying that you didn't file at all? If you got a refund from MD that year, it's pretty obvious that you DID file. Are the saying you had some large amount of income that you really didn't?
The letter should say what this $800 is for. Add that info to your question please, and calm down a little, it might be a mistake. |

This happened to me this year because of a screwup by my accountant. I had to pay penalties and interest plus the taxes of course. An accountant or tax preparer will generally pay the penalties and interest if it is their fault. I don't think you'll get that same guarantee from the software unless you can prove that it messed up.
I know that you can often settle with the tax departments in these situations. I've listed a service below that can help with this. I have not personality used them but I found them when I was researching what to do in my situation.
Good luck. |

You write the state of MD back and include a copy of your state tax return for that year. Tell them that you did your taxes in good faith and feel they have made an error and so could they please explain how they feel you owe them more money. |

How is that possible??? YOU ANSWERED YOUR OWN QUESTION:
I did my taxes through Turbo Tax that year ....
Don't try this at home!
If you made only $14k then your tax cannot be $800 unless you did not file timely.
I wonder if this is punishment for POTTY MOUTH??
Now, how to solve the problem? It would seem ill-advised to fix the problem using the saem method that created it. I'd urge you to spend $100 or so with an Enrolled Agent to review the letter and tax return and find the error. Be sure to bring all yuour source documents (W-2, etc).
Good luck. |

Why don't you chill out? You're not the only one this happens to.
Pull out your 2005 return (you did keep a copy, right?) and go over it to see if YOU made any mistakes. See where your numbers differ from the state's. If they're right, you will have to pay. If you really think you're right, follow their appeal procedures. |

If you used Turbo Tax, they may have a policy that if they screwed up your taxes they are responsible for the interest that has accumulated (which I bet is the majority of that $800). Do you have records? Pull them out and contact Turbo Tax. |

TurboTax isn't going to pay for an error its software made. (If the software had not made the error, you would have paid it anyway).
Are you sure that YOU didn't make an error in the program by incorrectly answering one of the TurboTax questions ? Perhaps you could advise the basis for this $800 back charge ? |

I personally don't think Turbo tax would take on the responsibility for any error in your form, but you can check.
I agree with the other person who suggests you contact the state and ask them to explain their calculations.

I received a letter for the Deparment of Revenue in Colorado when I filed my taxes in 2007 and yes I did get my state money. I was pretty upset that I got this letter 4 years letter...hmm...I called the State of Colorado to see why I owe them 465 and why 4 years later. The lady asked me if I got a letter from the IRS and I told her no, then she tells me that they can send a letter anytime they want. I am sorry but that didn't answer my question. After getting off the phone with her I called the IRS and the ladies that answered the phone was helpful. Both ladies had no idea why four years later I am getting a letter. They are sending mea copy of my w2's and a copy of what I filed. If you didn't get a letter from the IRS and don't have your w2's or copies of what you filed, I would give them a call. |
