Cynthia | Wage Tax? Live in PA but work in NJ? |
I recently accepted a job working in New Jersey but I live in PA. What wage taxes (%) am I liable for and what tax credits may I receive? Thanks. |

Since you live in PA and work in NJ, your employer should only be taking PA tax out of your check. PA and NJ have an agreement where residents of one state who work in the other are only taxed in the state where they live. Your employer has to do this if you request, as it's not optional. If your employer has taken out any NJ tax, you will have to file a NJ return at the end of the year requesting all withholding be refunded and then pay PA what wasn't taxed.
As for wage tax, that will be dependent on what borough, city, or township you live in. A few near Philadelphia don't have one. The other municipalities have taxes that range from 1% to nearly 4%. Since you work in NJ, they aren't require to withhold this. So you'll need to set aside money to pay the tax early next year. And since you work in NJ, you'll have to pay taxes into ther SDI (for unemployment) and FLI (for family leave). |
