We're married, filing tax return jointly. New this year: daughter has a new job.?
Do we 1) include her $6000 income and withholdings on our return?, or 2) have her do her own separate return for her $6000 income and withholdings? Is option-2 correct?

Thanks!!

option 2 is corect,

according to the IRS, if she is single, she does, the amount to file is 5,150. i assume she lives at home, and you paid most of her support. in that case, you get to claim her

http://www.irs.gov/publications/p929/ar02.html#d0e280

her standard deduction is going to be limited to $850 or earned income plus $300, but not more than the regular standard deduction (generally $5,150).
on that income

First, you failed to mention your daughter's age? If she's between 19 and 24, a full-time student and you supported her for 6 months of more in 2006, you and your husband can still claim her as a dependent. If this holds true, technically, you are still her custodial parent and have the right to claim her!
Now, if you claim her, she can still file on her own but CANNOT claim herself for the dependent credit. More scenarios but I'm tired of writing.....wanna know more........e-mail me!

answer two. if you file her with your taxes she will not make anything on her taxes. so fi you chose option 2 i don't think you can use her on your taxes

Judy1
She would do her own return. You can still claim her as a dependent if she meets the requirements to be claimed - in that case, she'd mark her return to show she's a dependent, and would owe a little tax, under $100, and would get the rest of her federal income tax withholdings back.

bostonianinmo
She does her own return, however she does NOT claim her personal exemption if you claim her as a dependent.

She will file her own return but she will file that someone can claim her as a dependant since you have paid over half of her support for the year. You will then claim her as a dependant on your return.

Yes she will need to file her own form. But you can still claim her till she is 21, if she does not file head of house then you can still use her as a dependent. You can go to the tax place and they will let you know which way the either of you could get back more money.

Terrence B
She needs to do her own return.
