Go down to your local IRS office and verify that the amount you received was the amount they wanted you to receive. If its not, they can fix the problem faster there than with you mailing it in. |

It may be yours to keep. If you don't receive a letter from the IRS in the next few days call them up. It could be that there was an error on your return in your favor. |

I received a refund that is more than I should have received because I've discovered I made a mistake on my return. I have not yet cashed this check. What should I do now?
Many mistakes are corrected in processing and a letter of explanation is mailed at the time the refund is issued. If the mistake was not corrected in processing, you need to file an amended or corrected return using Form 1040X (PDF), Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return, as soon as possible. Include copies of any schedules that have been changed or any Form W-2 (PDF) you did not include. If you return the refund check with a letter of explanation, a refund in the correct amount will be issued when the IRS processes the amended return. |

How do you know it was an accident ?
If the IRS gave you more money than what you claimed on your return, they probably re-calculated it to the correct amount.
If you think you made errors on your tax return, then you can amend the return.
Try running an estimate of your taxes separately.

By accident? More likely, the IRS caught and corrected an error on your return that was in your favor. |

call the toll free number to find out, maybe they calculated in your favor... will have to be on hold for a while but its better than waiting for the mail |

you may have made a mistake on your return and you are actually entitled to the larger refund. You will get a letter from the IRS which will tell you why you got a bigger refund. If you dont get this letter, than you do need to call them. I would hold on to the check until you clarify this. Dont just send it back or you may play heck trying to get a new check until you get a response from the IRS. |

Return the check without cashing it. That avoids any interest due, which can be assessed if you cash the check and mail back the balance.
Edited to add: Just Me makes a good point, make sure the check really is wrong before returning it. |

If it is an erroneous refund, see the link below to see how the IRS handles. (A lot of reading but, it handles many scenarios.)
The section is titled "Erroneous Refunds" (of course). |
