We pay taxes for rubbish clearence - would you pay more?
I heard on the radio that the government has given the green light for local councils to start experimenting with charging for charging households for clearing landfill rubbish by weight.

I thought a percentage of the council tax went towards this - so yet another stealth tax! What happens to those people in flats with communal bins? Is this going to be shared among the flats - very popular for the pensioner living on her own!!! What about those who cannot store rubbish and have the special sacks to put out? How are the dustbins going to be secured to ensure that a householder is only paying for his own rubbish?

This proposal is rediculous and unworkable! Anyone with outside space will just burn their rubbish and fly tipping will become an even bigger problem.

Would you be happy to pay extra or would you expect a reduction from your council tax bill if they were charging you this way?

I agree, it is both un-police-able (as would cost as much to police as it would return in tax) and ridiculous as we already pay for bin-men (who now only turn up once every-other week) as it is. Even now I have to travel to my local recycling centre once every other week to dump all the rubbish that overflows from the wheelie-bin. Even now (after all this time) we can only recycle green waste in bulk as the cardboard and paper is considered "sub-standard" (I had to laugh at that simply for its daftness). Yet still the likes of Tesco's over-package their goods and we fill our bins on a regular basis ... makes you wonder doesn't it ... if the government actually pay Tescos to do that simply so they can charge us for taking it away.

Once again it seems the public are having to pay for the terrible forward planning of a government that have lost touch with reality.

Happy to pay extra ? You have to be kidding ! We do not get value for money now.

DIXIE
This is to help conceal the increase in taxation and as an excuse for it.
I recycle as much as they let me and compost.

I have been separating packing from other waste and I propose we all do this and take it back to the supermarket it came from. They are the ones who create waste not us!

i agree, we pay too much in taxes and get very little in return, those of us who do not have children are still charged tax which goes to schools!
we should not have to pay extra to have our bins emptied, they only get emptied once a fortnight as it is!

it's just another stealth tax!

JOSE
No I would not. I agree with you totally. I stay in a multi-storey and I'm buggered if I'm paying for someone else's garbage. It's like this recycling fiasco. Why should I stand and separate everything when I'm already paying for this through my Council Tax? And they've a cheek to INCREASE this tax! It's about high time this bloody government got a grip.

Maid Angela
As I understand it the proposal is that you would get a reduced council tax and the more you recycled the bigger reduction you would get. It all sounds thwart with many problems but then we have to do something about the rubbish

Panos
A family of travelers that lived near my old house were very good at recycling.Their bin was always empty. They used to chuck their crap out in the mid of the night and leave it in the corner.!!!!How does it go.....a pikie a doit as you likie!!!

This is happening in England...go on protest.

Nexus6
I read yesterday that Gordon Brown has shelved plans to charge households individually and also that the idea of fortnightly bin collections has been scrapped.

I suppose we'll just have to see what they really intend to do, but I work for my local council and have heard of no such plan.
