Pretty much, what is stated above. ... To me, it almost sounds like it would be beneficial to hand out my social security card to illegals. I know how bad this sounds, but with what I am told.. it really doesn't matter if I lose it 40 years prior to retiring age.

Apologies... I misled my situation with the question. I have my SS card, however, someone I know stole it. I got the card back, and it was only out of my possession for about 12 hours at the most.
I want to know what would happen, if someone got a hold of my social security card number, but didn't have the card. |

Someone could steal your identity and get credit in your name and rack up tons of bills that you didn't ever do/purchase. You need your social for more than just retirement. You need it to get a job, buy a house, pretty much anything important now a days. |

You can have your identity stolen, they may be able to access your money, as in credit cards/bank, and that can result in your credit being ruined and you going broke. |

Employers may want to see your card to hire you and the IRS requires that the name on the records match the registered name. If someone has your card and changes the name, it will be a nuisance.
If someone uses your card and name to get a job then gets credit and destroys it by not paying bills they come after you.
If someone earns money on your SSN and fails to file income taxes then the IRS comes after you for failing to pay taxes on income YOU earned along with penalties and interest that can thousands to your taxes, plus the lawyers fees. |

The worst that could happen is that you may have to go to your local SS office and apply for a copy! There are other things that connect you to your SSN so don't get to worried about someone else using it! The worse that could happen is that if they work using your SSN, you get more at retirement! |
