What's going on with the federal deductions on my W2?
I have worked and still work for the same company since 11-'06. It was not until 3-'07 that my first federal income tax deduction was taken, to the tune of less than fifty cents. I made about 40K in '07. The state deductions, SS and all others seem to be in line and accurate with past W2's. I have not, but will talk to my employer about this soon. I have a family, and claimed the exact same that I did in previous years at other places of employment. What's strange is that the deductions are very sporatic, and the amounts vary with me being on salary. I ended up with a total of 61.00 being deducted in '07 for federal. Again, we are getting the expected state refund, and SS seems to be correct.

I'm on direct deposit, and am at fault for not watching these deuctions closer on my stubs. What's a little confusing is that the FIT column would not appear at all unless the .46 or .52 cent deduction was taken. Only FICA and the others, and I assumed that was federal. Can anything be done?

It's too late for 2007. You'll need to talk to your employer and get it fixed asap for 2008.

The only thing you can do now is check with your payroll department and be sure the W-4 is correct, so you don't have issues in the future.

If you mean that you now owe for federal and is there anything that can be done there, the only thing you can do is pay what you owe - you didn't pay through the year so you got the money you should have been paying in, so now you have to pay it.

How much tax is withheld depends upon your income and how many allowances you claimed on your W-4. Depending upon those numbers it's entirely possible that no FIT needed to be withheld at all.

Without knowing your tax situation it's not possible to give you a concrete answer but for sake of an example consider this: If you are married filing a joint return, earn $40k per year and your spouse does not work or have any other income, you have 2 children living at home and take the standard deduction you could claim 9 withholding allowances on your W-4. Only about $50 in FIT would be withheld but you'd STILL get a refund of about $477! This is because of the impact of the Additional Child Tax Credit which is a refundable credit.

As you can see, it's entirely possible to have little or no tax withheld AND still get a refund when you file, or at lest not owe much if anything. If you post all of the numbers and your tax situation we can have a look at things and see if you have anything to worry about or not.

federal withholding tax is all based on what you put on your w-4 form when you were hired - you should have gone back to your payroll dept and had them check it after your first paycheck when nothing was withheld - it sounds like you probably filed married and 9 exemptions or something, when it shouldn't be any more than the number of exemptions as people in your family = go to your payroll dept on Monday and check it out - file a new w-4 form

Talk to the HR group. This year you'll just have to suck it up and pay unless you have so many deductions/exemptions/credits that you have 0 tax liability.

Definitely talk to your employer and ask to see the W-4 form that you completed for them. If they entered a different number of exemptions than you requested, they could be responsible for paying your additional taxes, and almost certainly have to pay the penalties and interest that you are likely to get hit with.

It is possible that more taxes were withheld than appears on your W-2 as well. many companies are not very diligent about reconciling their records before printing and mailing the W-2s. Or, they could have made a typo when they entered the information from you W-4 (you said 0 and they typed 10 exemptions). Either way it is their fault and they need to correct the problem.

If you completed your W-4 correctly, and they screwed up but will not cooperate with you, call the IRS yourself (800-829-1040) and explain the problem and ask for their help in resolving it.

Good luck to you!

They should have withheld more. Maybe it's an error on their end. If I were you, I would tell them a specific % you want withheld from each check. That's what I do (25% for FIT & 5% for SWT).

if u paid ur taxes for every year , there is no need to worry about past years IF.
contact payroll and have this addressed tomorrow.
will save u some out of pocket expenses each tax year.
if ur FICA and Medicare were not proper you want to open and fully fund your retirement accounts and get full disability insurance to cover missing FICA values.
