PAN - is being one unique identification number for all the citizens of India. It is touted to be something like citizen number.
For opening any bank account, share trading account, buying/selling of properties, getting credit card, etc. requires PAN no. without which you cannot open/ operate these accounts.

without Pan Card u cannot do the following things
withdraw or deposit more than rs 50,000 in cash in your bank account.
U cant invest in share market
u cannot apply for mutual funds.
all property deals worth 10 lakhs or more also cannot be registered with out pan number.
iu u are working in a company or office and ur salary is more the taxable limits, ur employer has to deduct income tax and to deposit the tax with govt he need s your pan card number
and so on
it is more of a neccessity , must be obtained as per the laws of the country.

To be proud of the citizen of your Nation. Your contribution helps the nation grow and to extend nessary services to the weak part. PAN is the certificate of yours for payment of tax. Tax is a small part of your income. When you have to spend for maintenance of your house, you do not know you are spending for maintenance of your nation by paying the tax. Each citizen among us are paying tax including those who are below powerty line in one way or the other which all accumulates to the national exchequer (treasury) and the national administration plan the annual budget by looking to this accumulation. When each one of us use the roads, bridges, rice, wheat and other food crops that are not grown in our region, we get the benefits of PAN and much more. The other benefit is that if you need loan, you can establish that you have an income and capable to repay the loan. But never borrow or take loan - this is self-sufficienty, the aim of each of us.

you can compare it to social security no. of western country. in future government can trap anybody from PAN no. so it is good for white money and bad for black money. over all it is nice food for politician.

Bharat
PAN is going to be a must for all financial transactions.

PAN card is needed for every financial transaction in share market or mutual funds, or even in banks. And the most important thing is that it is ur unique identity.

Single point reference, for checking status of an individual. all investments are gradually requiring this as compulsory - want to invest rs. 50,000 in a mutual fund - no way, unless you have a PAN...
More than the benefits - its like mandatory !

Thornbird has given you an exhaustive response to this question. Only difference I have is that you don't need a pan card to open an account/have a phone line etc.

Pan card has been made mandatory only for investments in mutual funds and the stock market.

Permanent Account Number (PAN) is a national identification number, issued to all taxpayers of India whose income is taxable. This number is issued by the Income Tax Office.

This number is required for many activities such as opening an account, getting a phone line, receiving salary or professional fees. The primary purpose of PAN is to prevent tax evasion by keeping a track of monetary transactions. The PAN is unique, national, and permanent. It is unaffected by a change of address, even between states.

This number can be considered to be similar to Social security number issued in United States to citizens and other legal residents.

Structure and validation

* PAN structure is as follows: AAAAA9999A: First five characters are letters, next 4 numerals, last character letter
* Each deductee is uniquely identified by the PAN
* If the PAN does not follow the above structure, then the PAN will be shown invalid
* The fourth character of the PAN must be one of the following, depending on the type of assessee:

C — Company
P — Person
H — Hindu Undivided Family (HUF)
F — Firm
A — Association of Persons (AOP)
T — AOP (Trust)
B — Body of Individuals (BOI)
L — Local Authority
J — Artificial Juridical Person
G — Govt

* The fifth character of the PAN is the first character in the surname of the person to whom the PAN belongs.

Permanent Account Number is an identity document/number which can also be issued to non-taxpayers irrespective of whether the income is taxable or not. It is basically a unique identity issued to any of the above. So please revise the definition.
