This whole concept realy changed when President Clinton was in office and he helped pass Welfare Reform. Since the American public have a very negative view of the welfare system they restricted welfare and instead of increasing welfare they started putting refundable tax credits (meaning that you can get back more than you pay in)
Its been such a great way to redistribute wealth that now every tax season you have a large percentage of people buying kids for tax purposes to obtain the maximum EIC (refundable tax credit) and Additional Child Tax Credit (refundable tax credit).
So what we have now is a single mom with 2 kids making $17,000 a year she recieves everything she paid in on her w2 plus she gets around $3200 in EIC plus the additonal tax credit. So she pays no taxes and gets enough of a refund that in effect she pays no social security, no state or local, no sales tax, and still has money to boot.
Now Obama wants to cut her taxes? Only in this country can you cut 0. His meaning of cutting her taxes means giving her more money through our tax system rather than giving her welfare.
Its all double talk. Welfare is bad but if we rename it and hand it out through the tax system and call it refundable tax credits its great. Plus if we throw in were going to increase taxes on the rich then everybody who feels victomized in this country has an orgasim and runs to the polls even though they know nothing about our govenment and couldnt have an inteligent conversation on the issues if they had too. They can only spit out the 10 second sound byte they heard on the news the night before and half the time they mess that up.
I think its time for IQ tests before letting someone vote!!! |

Huh?
 |
2/3 of the economic activity in this country is from consumer spending. By giving a tax break to the middle class they will be most likely to spend the money which will stimulate the economy.
That's the theory. It is the opposite of the supply side economics. |

This sort of depends on whether you're wealthy or poor, doesn't it? |

considering that the U S government is virtually bankrupt, the real benefit would be to raise taxes for everyone. |

In the short term it will put a little (very little) money into the hands of the poor. In the long term it will hurt investments by the wealthy. The top 10% of the wealthy pay a majority of the taxes already. There are loopholes that some wealthy use to reduce their tax liability but the idea that the rich pay no taxes is false. The fact is as a group we pay a lot of taxes. Many wealthy look at income and wealth as a business that they own. If expenses are going to increase we look for a way to offset the added costs. This included the expense of more taxes. When taxes increase it does cause some uncertainty. When we are uncertain about our future and our wealth we tend to more conservative investments instead of business and commerce. When we hear terms like "Spread the wealth" we tend to go into protection mode. This is also not good for investments.
I have heard many times: "You can afford it" and truth be told yes I can afford more taxes. The point is I work very hard for my money and have for many years. I already pay more than my fair share of taxes. And I will do every thing possible to protect what I have earned. |

I've never seen any benefits from taxing the wealthy and tax breaks for the poor. The whole mentality of taxing hard working people, or people who are just good with their money, so that the lazy or dumbasses of the world can take a little more for doing nothing, doesn't make any sense. But that's socialism for you.
Steal from the rich and give them less incentive to help their country! Give to the poor, and give them more reason to stay useless. Work hard America! Millions on welfare are depending on you! |

If you are socialist, it is one more step towards socialism. |
