Holly Golightly | What are the stimulus checks REALLY going to do??!!? |
Honestly, with gas prices where they are, how much will this action actually stimulate the economy? Look at how much gas prices have jumped in the last week (odd that the week the payments stated gas jumped up again!), even food has skyrocketed. I think for te average family, those checks will go towards paying off the credit cards they are living on. What does anybody here have planned for their checks? |

What are they REALLY going to do? Double the Federal deficit for FY08. They may help some folks through a rough patch for a while and be wasted by others. And they might even buy a few votes. But in the grand scheme of things, that's about it. |

The only thing I can think is to increase the national debt.
Unless new things are bought, nothing will happen. I hope everyone pays off those credit cards to show the govt what idiots they are |

My opinion? For the most part, the major effect will be running up the deficit. |

They will run this country further into the ground! In all actuality...the money you are getting back is the money you busted your butt for last year that the Government was going to keep. This WILL NOT help our economy, Bush is an idiot but thanks for the money because it will help a bit for my kids daycare which costs us about $900 a month and the OUTRAGEOUS GAS prices...my pocket book is always empty!!!!! It is so sad to see that the average incomed people are now sinking to the poverty level. My husband and I make an average of $50-$60,000 a year and it just is NOT enough!!! We have credit card debt out the butt and we struggle to pay his child support for his son which is way under what it should be!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |

The money for those checks basically comes from borrowed Chinese money. We're so far in debt now that nations like China, Israel, Great Britain, and others, could call in the debts and own our entire nation.
Although the checks benefit us individually in the short-term, they will do more harm in the long-term, adding to the existing national debt and probably dropping the value of the dollar even further. The government wants us to spend the checks on economy-stimulating activities like shopping, but many people (myself included) will use it to pay down debts that have accumulated in the slowed economy, not adding any benefit to the economy.
There is no short-term solution to a slowed economy. Long-term solutions include stopping the excess printing of money, less opressive regulations to stimulate competition and innovation, and cutting government spending. |

Mine is paying off a CC, and my first tax refund paid off the other one. NO MORE CC's for us, and they get cut up. I don't think many will just spend it willy nilly, and most will be smart about it and pay off there debits, but that's not what the gov. wants, well I say too bad. Can't afford to eat and drive so how in the word can I afford the couple extra bills each month.
Should get mine Friday, and can't wait to hit the send button and print my paid in full recepit:) |

What some people above me don't understand is that these checks are a "rebate" of the taxes we have already paid in. It is a surplus of taxes taken in that the country does not need to run the government. Most years the government keeps the surplus, but this year the government is giving "back" some of your overpaid tax money which WILL help stimulate the economy because Americans will be spending more. The people who are against this idea usually are people who are not informed about economics. Really, some of the answers above me do NOT know what they are talking about. Especially that one with the mans picture. |

these checks will put money in your pocket. And these will be a temptation for recepients to spend the money, thereby boosting US economy.
For me, i will continue my tight wad habits. Save most of it. I won't rush out and blow it all!! thats for sure! |

Like you said, I am going to pay on some CC's and the rest goes to savings. Exactly what the gov't doesn't want you to do. |
