What are your views on cutting VAT to 15%?
What will this mean?

save a few pennies now but cost us dearly in the future?

How will this affect those trying to make an honest living and struggling with bills and mortgages?

Please give me your thoughts

Thanks

It's not going to make very much difference, is it? I've been saying for months what will really help is to abolish the VAT on gas and electricity. That will be an instant saving of 5% on our bills. Gas and electricity are vital to our lives, just as much as water and there is no VAT on water. We also need for the mortgage companies to pass on savings on the mortgages - we've had a 1.5% bank rate cut and not seen any benefit from it. God help this country in a couple of years when all this mis-management by Labour comes home to roost!

I'm thinking 'big deal'! 2.5% less VAT on a £30 christmas present works out at a saving of less than a quid. Great, thanks. I'll buy someone else something nice with that.

A fortune could be saved if we limited MP's expence account to
£ 2 million a year.
or made MP's stick to just one Rolls Royce.
Will MP's still get to vote themselves a hefty wage rise

well "every little helps " according to tesco, but I doubt it it will actually help auch at all - we will end up paying for it in the end, There's no such thing as a free lunch...

I won't mean anything to us everyday folk, it only means that we would save £25 on every £1000 of VAT chargable items we buy and thats taking into account if the shops reduce their prices to pass on this saving, which is unlikely as it would probably cost them more to change all the labelling etc.
The only people its really gonna help is the big companies, i.e. the supermarkets et al (lower VAT bills), who were probably not having difficulties anyway !

It's not going to make the slightest difference ....

Our local DIY store has '10% off on Fridays' .. having visited on almost every day of the week, I can tell you it makes sod all difference ... Saturday is the most busy and Monday the most empty .. Friday may be a little busier than Sunday ..

M&S just had a 20% Off day .. THAT made a difference ...

To make the slightest difference we need 10% off ... better would be 15% off ...

Even so, I bet a lot of people are putting off ALL their planned 'big ticket' purchases until the 'new year sales' ... and many people will even be putting off buying Xmas presents until they hear if the VAT is going to be reduced ....

this cut in vat is going to mean very little to me, true it will mean a slight decrease in prices in the shops but it`s not going to really get me out there spending my money i have far too many bills to pay what would be of help is if they cut income taxes and or gave us more money but they are too stingy for that or should that be can`t afford it

Make very little difference to me I think No VAT on food anyway Might save a few coppers on household products,,, Not anticipating a large purchase where it might make a bit of difference, A slight saving perhaps on car repairs , MOT etc,

It will be a disaster! Will retailers re-price all their goods? 1p off a 50p choccy bar - of course they won't - they'll just pocket the difference. Yesterday I filled my car with petrol at a cost of £40 odd. Had I filled the car today I could have saved nearly £1 but it won't encourage me to buy more petrol - after all I've only got one petrol tank. It may make a small difference on big ticket items - £21 per £1000 but all this will do is encourage anyone who was thinking of buying such an item anyway to buy it while the lower VAT rate applies. But what happens when VAT is restored to 17.5%? Everyone who wants a new TV, car, or kitchen will have already bought one and the economy will hit a brick wall just at the moment when the Government hits us with higher taxes to pay for the current giveaway thus ensuring the recession lasts longer than it will anyway.

Doug
It likely won't affect any of us common folk; I'd be very surprised if shops adjusted their prices to reflect the cut, more likely they'll keep prices the same so they can get nicer profits.

Cant see retailers honestly passing it on.

Just another way Gordon Brown is trying to restore faith in the Labour Party. Trouble is all the other parties are just as bad.
So I guess were pretty much ALL DOOOOOMED!!!
