What benefits would I be entitled to claim?
Hi, I would welcome any advise that people could give me.

I work full time earning roughly £22,000 a year. My husband also works full time and he earns roughly £25,000 a year. We have quite a substantial mortgage on a house but are desperate to have children.

What I am trying to find out is if I were to fall pregnant and took the 39 weeks off work that I could be entitled to what sort of benefits could we get from the government to help us.

I welcome any advise that people can give us.
Many Thanks

Just to clear a few things up for all the haters. Me and my husband both work extremley hard at our jobs and to earn the wage we do. If I give up work to be able to have children we will be on his salary alone which is £25,000 a year - hardly enough to bring up a child and also pay the mortgage.

The reason we had to buy the house is because we had no other way of getting one (like people that have children to get a house from the local council).

I have been working since I was 16 and have paid my taxes and would like to know what financial backing I could get from the government should I wish to take some time off so we can have a child.

Please no more horrible messages as I am a nice person desperate to have a child - and will wait until I am financially able to do so but some help would be much appreciated by the government.

None would be the answer

edit - and sorry to be blunt but your mortgage is your problem you have a decent income coming in and it isnt the states problem if you want to take time off to have kids

You get far too much to get help off the gov!!!
If your maternity pay dropped it to lower than 45000 per year you would be entitled to a small amount. But you would get around £17 per week child benefit.
If you are so desperate to have children then sell your house and buy something more appropriate, I think you need to focus an what means more a child, which you can afford in a smaller home, or a child who you can't afford to clothe, with a huge mortgage.
I know it is hard but either a move, change of job, something needs to change before you consider bringing up a child.
Oh check out www.entitledto.co.uk you will get your answer there if you use it pretending that you have a child.

lauren_xxx1
you will get child benefit which is £18.80 a week and also your maternity leave money.

I'm not too sure...but as you have a combined salary of £47,000 the chances are that there will not be many benefits awarded to you by the government. You can google Tax Credits, but its unlikely it will apply to your situation.

Maternity benefit is statutory if you become pregnant (I seem to remember that the process involves a bit more than falling over), but I am having a hard time believing that a couple with a combined incomed of £47,000 per year want to know what benefits they are entitled to.
What I have suggested to several friends in the past is that they see if they can live on one person's salary for a year (As your husband earns the largest amount I suggest his) and save the other person's for that time . If you can do that then you will have enoguh to live on while you are off for a few months. If you cannot do that then I would start saving for a couple of years anyway so you have a financial buffer. Realistically if you cannot do that then you might want to re consider having children for quite a while.

nothing your earning are sufficent, If you want children then you'll have to do what the rest of use do and struggle through.
Your not 'entitled' to a bean and the attitude that the world owes you quite frankly annoys me.

sorry

you would get paid maternity leave but would have to go back to work for the same length of time you would be off. Unlikely you would get much benefit if any by way of tax credit for instance as you are probably over the threshold, particularly since you have a valued asset, in your house. You would get child benefit. Have to say it doesnt sound like the right time to have a child - maybe need to downsize the house/mortgage but since that is unlikely given the uk financial and housing market, I would keep taking the pills!
