Anything you had to pay for as part of your job is deductible. But ask yourself this first: will all of that, plus mortgage interest, property taxes, stuff like that, add to over $3400? If it does, itemize all of your stuff. If not, take the standard deduction ($8,950) and don't bother with it.

Uhhh, yes, absolutely, and yes...you better have receipts for anything you deduct from your income, denying Uncle Sam a slice of your income pie. Odds are you can/will get away with a deduction or two and never need receipts for it...or even all of your deductions in a given year.

But if and when the day comes that you're the lucky winner of a deduction be questioned or worse, an audit, ewww shivver, you better have proof that you could deduct what you deducted. A receipt is all that's legally necessary to say, 'hey, don't tax me on this amount of money coz it went to pay for X'. Lucky you, as a cop you get to deduct quite a lot.

Why don't you go to a proffesional, they can find a lot more deductions than people who know not a whole lot about taxes.

Most police officers are required to keep their gun skills up to date. If you are required to drive your own vehicle to the shooting range for practice, then that would be deductible.

If you're required to pay for your own ammo at the shooting range, then you can deduct that.

Body armour, deduct that if it isn't provided as part of your employment.

ANYTHING that is work related. All of the things you mentioned seem legitimate. If it can be related to work, or used for work in any way, do it. The worst the CPA can tell you is no, but I doubt that will happen. If it does, arrest him! ;)

I'll bet somewhere in the police station there's advertisements from tax professionals who specialize in doing taxes for police officers. You probably can deduct many of your expenses, but a professional who does this kind of thing all the time will know exactly which ones you can and which ones you can't.

Oh, and YES, you will need receipts! You don't want to be in the position of having the IRS ask you for proof of your deductions and you not being able to provide it!
