Not paying your taxes on time can incur penalties. Not filing your taxes can result in jail time.

Have your tax professional file your back taxes for you or contact the IRS and ask for their help. If you make an attempt to correct this error in judgement, they'll work with you. If they have to come after you, all bets are off.

Last years stimulus ??? That should be the least of your worries.

go to a tax preparer and ask them to do your taxes for this and last yr. you may end up paying more but at least you'll know it was taken care of and you probably wont be audited

Taylor
Just file them this year.

asil_marie_drummer
You have three years to file them if you have a refund coming to you. I don't know what the penalties are if you owe the IRS.

As for the stimulus package, you had to have filed your taxes by October 2008 to be elidgible for the rebate. I know, because that was the deadline my parents had to meet in order to get the extra money.

Rick S
You have three years to file taxes for that year. If you are getting a refund then its will be fine. If you owe money then penalties and interest will have started to add up from April 16 of last year.
It is always a smart idea to go to a tax preparer and have them give you a free consultation ( Amscot). My wife works there and that is what a good portion of her day is doing just talking to people and giving out consultation.
The stimulus money can still be collected this year on return under the recovery rebate section on the return. It will all be in one check.

Where is My Mind?
You can still file it this year...you can file back taxes up to three taxes up to three years i believe. Be careful though, b/c you can get audited if you dont! So point is, you can file this year for both this year and last year...

rtfm
File them now. If you were owed a refund, there won't be any penalty and you'll still get your refund. If you owed the IRS, they may tack on a little bit of interest.

It's *much* better just to file them now and get it over with, rather than wait for them to catch up with you -- and you know they will.

(By the way, the three-year limit is only for claiming a refund. If you have past due tax returns where you owe money, you must file them no matter how many years it's been.)

Ms. Angel..
Everyone always says you have three years to file your return, well that is if you are due a refund, but when all employers, banks etc provide IRS with your income, stocks/bonds etc, IRS will see it as balance due because IRS doesn't know what dependents you will claiming, what deduction you are entitle to etc. So don't fall for the 3 years.
You must have your 2007 tax return or any other return you have not file to be able to receive you 2008 refund this year. IRS has a REFUND HOLD program that if you are not in full compliance by filing all your tax returns from 2002 through 2007 then IRS will hold the refund until all your returns are received and processed. Processing of previous tax returns takes 6-8 weeks. So file your 2007 now before filing 2008, and in your 2008 tax return you will be able to claim the stimulus. Visit IRS website www.irs.gov for information on the recovery rebate. Penalties are only charged if you owe IRS.
