Allison W | What do I do if my I recieve a notice that says someone is claiming me as a dependent on their taxes? |
I am filing as single and am not a dependent of anyone, but when H&R Block submitted my info, the IRS said they can not process because I am being claimed as a dependent. Is this easily resolved, or is it going to be a problem? |

You need to first try to find out who it is but sometimes this can be because either you or the other person may have put the wrong social security number in on the dependents part so make sure you have the correct social security number. This can be easy or hard to fix depending on who claimed you, but you have to call the IRS to fix it. You should call them and they will assist you in any way possible, and check out who claimed you. This may be a case of someone stealing your social security number and using it or it could be that your parents claimed you. I would ask your parents if they claimed you before you get too stressed out about it because they may have and just forgot to tell you that they did. In some cases even if you don't live with your parents they can claim you for example if you are going to college and they are paying for it they may be able to still claim you. |

Don't bother calling the IRS. You will not be given any additional information other than what has already been given out.
Talk to your preparer. Have them review the rules for dependents with you. If you might be considered a dependent by another person (a family member usually), then ask them if they filed with you as a dependent.
If you find out who filed you as a dependent, you have to decide whether to challenge it or not. Ask your preparer to tell you how much your refund is reduced by not claiming yourself, and then decide if the additional refund is worth the hassle. You always have the option of not claiming yourself.
To challenge the fact that someone has claimed you as a dependent, mail in your tax return. Your preparer should have a cover letter to enclose, stating that the return was rejected because you were previously claimed as a dependent. Enclose proof that you are not a dependent. Your preparer should help you with the necessary documentation. |

Well, it might be easily resolved. Talk to your parents and see if they claimed you, and read the rules in the irs booklets for being claimed. If they can claim you and did, then just refile your return and don't claim yourself.
If nobody can legally claim you, then file your return by mail, claiming yourself. The other person claiming you and you will each receive a letter from the IRS telling you that two people claimed the same person, and saying that whoever didn't have the right to the claim needs to file an amended return dropping the claim - then if nobody does, they'll investigate and decide who gets the exemption. The other person will have to pay back whatever he got by making the claim he wasn't entitled to, with interest and possible penalties. |

You need to let the IRS know about it, show them proof of single residency, etc. Evidently, at least they know who did it. It may take awhile, but they will eventually straighten it out and you'll get your rightful refund, and they (whoever) will have to pay back the IRS and could be fined or jailed. Bad thing is, You ain't gonna get your refund any time soon |

Call the IRS. Have you SS number at hand, DOB, address, etc.
This may be a mistake but there are chances also of fraud. Contact IRS soon |

chances are if you are young....it may be a parent or guardian. The same happened to my sister, and it wa my dad trying to be a jerk. All you have to do is file on paper and send it through the mail, it will take longer for it to be processed, but they told my sis it should all work out |

H & R Block should know the answer to this question. This must happen all the time.
You could call the IRS at 800-829-1040 and ask them.
Good luck. |
