Probably a scam, trying to get you to "update your info" or something, then they get your stats. I'd just burn it and pretend you never got it. That's what I'd if I were in your shoes. |

hold on there ...
could be one of several things:
someone else's SSN -- as in someone who used to live at your address or someone with a similar name whose address isn't yours. if so, just return the W-2 with envelope marked "unknown at this address".
your employer could be using a payroll service and the EIN is for the service ... check your last pay stubs for similar YTD data and/or the same EIN number
if you officially work for a temp service, it could be them, too.

if it is completely unknown to you in all respects, you may have just detected that someone is using your SSN illegally. This is, of course, ID theft.
if so, you need to report this asap to your local police and get a copy of the police report. then you'll need to send a copy of the police report to both IRS and SSA -- what you want is for this other person's activities to be removed from your records
[IRS might think you have two jobs but failed to report all your income when it is the thief's income that isn't reported -- which could easily mess up your return and refund.]

You must take care of it before you file your Federal Tax Return, because this information has been provided to IRS and once your file IRS(about 18months after you file)will send you a letter CP2000 for underreported income. This income is under your name and social security and your home mailing address, are you sure you didn't work at that place. Just because the main office is locate in a different State than where you live doesn't mean you didn't work there.
If you feel you are a victim of ID theft contact the Federal Trad e Commission and report it to the Police. |

Look up company on internet....and also try looking up on state business licensing.....if cant find anything call irs again and ask for supervisor....also, could it be a company you worked for but the name that you know them by and their incorated name are different, because they have more than one company under corp.......someone may be using your info to work......identity theft, try also call better business bureau |

I would be more concerned that an illegal alien has high jacked your social security number. I would hurry up and put a fraud alert on all three of your credit reports before they rob you blind. Call the police in the city that the W-2 came from and ask to file a fraud report. MAYBE they will send someone out to investigate. You can also contact INS or whatever they are calling themselves now to report the bogus activity on your SSN from that employer and that illegal worker.

the companies name should be on the w2, as well as location. you can call information and give them that info and hopefully they will find it for you. |

I would not worry about it too much. When the person realizes that they do not have that form to file their taxes they will find a wayto contact the company. An EIN number is used like a social security number but it is assigned to sole proprietorships, corporations, limited liability companies (LLC), partnerships, estates, trusts and other entities. |
