What do our taxes pay for?

If you like irony...tax money paid for most of the original structure of the internet. So without that money you wouldn't be able to ask this question. Just ask Al Gore...he invented it and paid for it with government money. Okay being serious now, it really started in either the late 40's or in the 50's depending on your source and how far you want to stretch the idea.

Other than that...not very much if you want to disregard most of the modern perks we have now. Paved roads, hospitals, police, military...you get the idea.

Oops...can't forget Tang...without the space program you would have never had the option to purchase it.

Hope this helps.

For our schools, hospitals and stuff... what we pay comes back to us sorta...

The tax base runs the internal structure of the country. Since we are so far in debt now, a vast amount of it is simply used to pay interest on the deficit. In fact we're so laden with debt that I believe the debt share comes out to $140,000 per family in the U.S. Imagine what people would do if they were told they are responsible for that amount of money and had to pay it back! Well guess what... you are and you do! So while the networks entertain you in the coming months with an exciting horse race of an election and the candidates all make empty promises that cannot be kept, just remember... if you don't pay that $140k, it will be passed to your kids and their kids at ever higher rates. And of course, they'll double tax your IRA, 401k and retirement savings. What, you don't think the clever politicians will tap into trillions of dollars in savings just siting around in 30 years when they need it?

the reason why you don't know this is because you don't go to school or never been to school

Fox News, Haliburton and a myriad of other special interests, mostly faith-based.

Oh, and our taxes just paid for Haliburton, through a no-bid contract of course, to grind down Karl Rove, Dick Cheney and Ann Coulter into a black powder which was mixed into illegally tapped oil from Alaska to create a paste to smear all over John McCain in order to incubate and spawn what is Sarah Palin.

Lots of things: Public works programs, social security programs and welfare, Government official salaries.

State taxes and local taxes pay for Police salaries and things like local infrastructure maintenance and schools.

I believe it goes into a big 'pot' and from their it is divided up. The members of some house decides who gets how much depending on the reports each of those money sucking entities say they need each year. For example each branch of the military goes up and asked for how ever much they want and they get a 'yay' or 'nay.' Our taxes help pay for medicaid, education, disaster relief, politician payroll, food stamps and more....lots of money....so the more work-able people go out to work the more money goes into this 'pot' and perhaps lessen the cost of tax...who knows what the real answer is...But this it basically how most people explained it to me.
