What do you Think?
I was reading on Yahoo, where the guy is being put in jail for 51 months, thats over 4 years, all because he didn't pay taxes on his surivor winnings. Do You think putting someone in jail for this long for that is reasonable, we all make stupid mistakes. Now our taxes are paying for him to be in jail, and their is no room for the real criminals! What do you think?

What he is getting so much time for is perjury (lying under oath). He had a chance to make a deal and avoid much jail time but instead chose to take it to court and lie to the judge and to the jury. If you don't punish a mistake with a severe enough punishment that it really hurts the person then they will feel that what they did was ok and worth the cost. The cost has to be significant so they won't do it again.

terri2003anne
Yes!!! He was the dumb fart that made the mistake so he has to deal with it!

Nah. He shudnt b in jail. Just take sum of those winnings away.

I think our gov. stinks, they do what ever they want to anyone they want when ever they want, things are so corrupt in every dept. of gov. that we're at the point of no return. Taxing income/game/gambling... winnings is an outrage! I'm all for eliminating the IRS, and creating a fair flat tax for US citizens.

Yes...Lock his butt up!

This guy bragged about not paying his taxes on national television!

Lock him up and throw away the key!

Well, if you're talking about Richard Hatch, he didn't make a stupid mistake. He is a smart business man and Survivor made him expressly aware that he was responsible for taxes on the winnings. Do I think the time fits the crime? Maybe not. Do I think we pay too much in taxes? Absolutely yes. Would I have not paid taxes if I had won? Hell no. I for one and scared of the IRS and the federal government. He put himself in this position.

NO I DONT THINK RICHARD SHOULD GO TO JAIL..MAKE HIM PAY HIS TAXES AND A LITTLE EXTRA AND POSSIBLY PAY THE FINES AND MONEY IT WOULD TAKE TO BE IN JAIL FOR 51 MONTHS...

bhawna_feb28
i think he shud not be in jail..some money cud be taken from him and then left

I think that the justice system nowadays is just a big joke & the people who have studied it & who make these decisions should go back to University & learn something else, like pottery. I say pottery because it is the only thing that they could probably get right.

It seems unfair b/c you think of prison as being a place for murderers, drug dealers, pedophiles, etc.. But the law is the law & tax evasion is breaking the law.
