What do you do when you're at the absolute end of your rope?
There are a lot of things going on right now that I don't feel I can handle - but what really has got me down right now is that my brother came over tonight to do my taxes with me and I found out I have to pay nearly $700, I can't do it! I'm barely living paycheck to paycheck as it is, there's nooo way I can come up with that money - I'm at the end of my rope with all these little frustrations - it seems like everything is suddenly going wrong, I don't know what to do - please give me some advice...

You may want to get a second opinion on your taxes. If you do owe that much money and you cant pay it all at once, the IRS may work out a payment plan with you.

I hope things get better (my motto is when you are at the end of your rope, tie a knot and hang on)

Just hold on, maybe something good will happen. Please don't give up.

If you have your health and there is a tomorrow, it is never the end.

Get out of the rut, step back and relax. These problems will always be there, the crux of the matter is that you have to learn to handle them.

The good thing about payments is that those whom we owe are usually interested in receiving it, remember it is to their disadvantage to loose a payment.

Keeping that in view, go to an expensive cafe (I usually do that), have a cup of coffee (battles are not fought on an empty stomach) perhaps a muffin or two. Draw a list of priorities, first thing first. Objective of this exercise to ensure that you remain afloat, whatever you need to remain afloat, including your credit card payments, car loans (do not try to sell the car for a mere 700 problem), groceries expense. Isolate your entertainment expenses, now that is where you can start saving. Ascertain what you can scrape out of your paycheck. If you can, get a part-time job. Set short term goal, like weekly saving budget, make sure you evaluate as you go along and make sure that you are following your plan.

Make an appointment with the collection agency representative, go see him/her and tell them how you were unable to see it coming therefore you cannot pay this amount immediately, however, you can pay this amount as per the schedule you have worked out (the amount that you offer as commitment should carry a cushion).

At first the person is going to put a lot of pressure on you, even try to threaten you, remain cool -do not say anything to offend him/her, you cannot afford to at this time.

This could take a while, maybe a day or a week -negotiation tactic that they will use, to wear you down. Once they agree that you file an application stating your problem and the solution that you have to offer, make sure that you ask them for an acknowledgement and an answer. Do not call them to check up till the time that they have given to you. If no reply comes, send an email or a letter, make sure their response is in writing.

Say they refuse, the first time, you maintain your course -let me assure you, not even a court will go against you because you have promised to pay -but on different terms, thats all. Penalizing you will cost the state more and will strip you off a decent and honest way of life, thereby contributing to the society in a positive manner.

My guess is that they will come back to you with their number (instalment amount). Now remember the cushion that you had kept earlier, there, if it fits within agree to it, infact all the time taken thus far would have given you the chance to save that amount therefore showing them that you are actually committed and make the first payment.

Once you make that first payment, they are locked and you are committed too for the rest of the period.

Most of our problems arise from money, have enough to be comfortable, do not strecth beyond your limits and remember there will always be tomorrow.

When you do reach the end of the rope, then it is time to start climbing again.

When I was feeling down, I read a series, "Cup of Comfort" I believe by Cathleen Sell. Anyhow, the stories comforted me by giving me hope and inspiration and by letting me know that there were people in worse situations than I was in. I know it's tough but things will get better for you.

Things seem pretty sucky right now - I know. It's that feeling of not being able to breathe combined with utter helplessness. If one cannot fight or flee - one feels stress - as a fundamental emotion. I would honestly say the best thing you can do is 1) chill. 2) get a good nights sleep 3) start calling your friends after you've had a good breakfast, and a nice cup of coffee. $700 may sound like a lot of money to you now - but, there's still time to financially plan around it. (for instance, in Canada - you can take a loan out to contribute to your Retirement savings plan that would nullify you tax payment - then you can pay that loan back over the course of the next year or two . . .)
Another odd dose of reality type of advice: you WILL make more money eventually - and each year you make more . . . this will pass . . .

Stacy, I know you count on your brother to do your taxes.

He's been doing them so many years he can't keep up with the changes.

Why would you do that? He has no idea really now does he.

If you prayed for tax relief, let your Uncle Eric help you. You are paying too much in taxes and your brother tried his hardest but he didn't know all the rules.

Pray, prayer is important...now you get yourself, and your tax problem into another question and your Uncle Eric is going to help you.

I've helped tougher cases than you and you are not in prison at least not right now.
