Companies with a taxable turnover of £64,000 or more have to register with HM Revenue & Customs to collect VAT on their sales and pay it over to the government.
Companies then complete quarterly (usually) returns to pay over the VAT they have collected. They are also allowed to recover VAT they have been charged on their purchases.
Companies who make supplies that are VATable can also register for VAT voluntarily when they have a turnover under £64,000.
Some things are not VATable, such as financial services, health/welfare services and others. Therefore if you only carry out these activities, you can't register for VAT.
It is illegal for a company that is not registered for VAT to charge you VAT on something you purchase from them.
All VAT registered companies have an unique 9 digit VAT registration number |

VAT = Value Added Tax |

It means that the business makes over a certain amount and has to pay the government Value Added Tax, on goods sold and bought.
This is done yearly in a tax return and in accounts which have to be checked and signed by an accountant or banker.
If you look on receipts e.g. the credit card slip you will see a number like 234 800 500 000, this is the company's vat number for tax purposes. |
