What does a prospective employer do once they have your previous w-2?
I worked for a company that went out of business and have since taken a new job. In order to verify my employment there I need to present them with a W-2. After the company went out of business I remained unemployed for a few months, which was at the beginning of the year, however when i applied I lied and said I worked there about 2 months longer than I actually did because I did not want to show a gap in my employment history. So I am afraid when i give them the actual W-2 it will be obvious that I lied since the earning will be so low. I want to know what steps they take in verifying it. For example, If i changed my earnings to say I made a couple thousand more would the new company be able to find out? I need an answer today so any help, especially from HR people would be greatly appreciated, it was for the year '07. thanks.

When you lie, this is what happens.

They will take no steps to verify it and will assume it is correct. You could just say, if they ask, that your earnings were low for 2 months because of a sick leave or you went to part time or something like that.

I'm surprised that an employer is asking for your W-2 in the first place - I've been in HR for years in California...never heard of that being done.

Regardless, both Social Security and EDD track this information, but it's not legal for an employer to use the information from these agencies for the determination of employment.

The exception is if you signed a waiver giving the new employer the right to obtain background information from a W-2 or gov. agency.

Best policy: Don't lie on your applications. You can be fired at any time in the future if they find out you've made untrue statements on your application.

Shouldnt have lied. I put on my resume that the company went out of business. That is a perfectly legitimate reason to have a short employment gap.

My old employer would call to verify employment history and salary. If they couldn't because the company went out of business, they'd ask for W-2s and/or final paystubs.

Lying about salary was worse than a job gap...though your W-2 is going to make it look like you lied about the salary.

I wouldn't lie - if they confront you just say you were giving a rough estimate and you didn't realize you worked there for less time until you looked at your w-2. 2 months isn't a lot of time - how long were you actually there?

There is no need for you to give your employer your previous W-2. Your employer gives it to you shortly after the end of the year so you can attach it to your tax return.

Two months plus, minus is not a considerable period of time. I would not worry about it especially if it was more than a year ago.
