What does it mean that Obama wants to uncap social security tax and what will it do to business in America?

The current social security cap is for 2008 is $102,000. The social security tax rate is 6.2% and the employer has to match that, if you are self employed you have to match it. Social security will tax is paid on every dollar of wages earned up to $102,000. All amounts after that are not taxed by social security. Obama is wanting to leave that the way it is, but reinstate the social security tax to wages over $250,000 and increase the tax by an additional 4% (8% once matched), so it is kind of like a donut effect. This would be bad for our economy! I think Obama is an idiot, and is just clever with words.

Several got it right about how there will be no max cutoff, so you continue to have money deducted from your gross. Another thing he didn't mention is those that paid all that SS will also get a lower return on their deductions if they have other sources of investment income and assets. Wealth re-distribution part 'B' of BO's socialist plan to steal from those who earn and plan for their future.

Right now, if you earn a certian amount of money, you stop paying social security tax. I believe it is $90,000 currently.

Obama wants people who earn more than $90,000 to pay no matter how much they earn in a year. So if you earn a million dollars, you would pay social security on all of it.

dumdum...I already pay more than people who earn less than me. There comes a time when you get the tax rate high enough that those of us who are getting taxed to death will take our money elsewhere. Under Obama, I guarantee that a lot of money would go elsewhere, and federal revenues would drop. You say that we can "afford it" but enough is enough. I worked and sacrificed my @$$ off, not to have it all stolen from me by my government for the benefit of those who choose not to pay their own way.

uncap social security. This means an additional 6.5% tax on about 60K a year of base pay, and another 6.5% tax on 15-35K
If you raise corporate taxes,
every american will pay those
taxes every time they seek
products or services,
what about the obama LIE
about taxcuts for 95% of
americans?

It was former President Bill Clinton who several years ago set out the limited options for Social Security reform: cut benefits, invest privately, or raise taxes.

Now, opponents of President Bush’s proposals for Social security reform have ruled out changes in benefits or private investment through personal accounts, their alternative is starting to emerge. It is the largest tax increase in American history.

Currently only the first $90,000 of wages is subject to the payroll tax. Opponents of the president’s plan for personal accounts argue that Social security’s looming financial problems could be fixed if that cap were raised or eliminated. But, while soaking the rich may be a politically popular approach, the reality is that this enormous tax hike would seriously damage the U.S. economy while doing very little to save Social Security.

Eliminating the cap on payroll taxes would be, by far, the biggest tax hike in U.S. history, more than $1.3 trillion in new taxes over the first 10 years alone. As bad as that would be in the aggregate, it would be even worse for individual workers. A worker earning $100,000 per year would pay $1,240 more in taxes each year. Moreover, raising the tax cap would not just impact the super rich, as is often argued, but would fall most heavily on the upper middle class. Some 9.2 million Americans would see their taxes increased

I think it means there will be no limit on how much they can take out of your check.

Therefor, people will get paid less then they used to, and be forced to work more for the same money.

Lots of things could happen because of this.

(:P)
The Social Security tax is a farce. In its present form, it is a heavy tax on lower income people (<100k).

There is no real relation between the tax and the benefits paid. The benefits paid are based on defined benefits. The tax revenues from Social Security are used for general revenues but are disguised as a funding source for SS benefits.

If you raise the cap, then you do increase taxes for higher income individuals. This serves to fund those at the lower end (the robing hood concept) but more importantly, it serves to raise more funds for general government operations.

He wants to raise this insane cap of income that social security is based.

It works like this. The tax is paid in up to a certain amount. Then it is no longer taken out of your paycheck. To take the cap off, will take care of the social security problem and will not create a hardship on anyone. The rich can afford the tax.You don't hear the poor griping about the tax, do you? And the poor have to pay it out of all their paychecks. So why shouldn't the rich have to pay it out of all their paychecks? They are the ones that can afford to do it.
