What does it mean when your employer garnishes your check?
I saw that a friend of mine is getting wages garnished from her check from her employer. Her total is gonna be like $4000.00. What does this mean exactly and what are some things that she could have done for this to happen? I am not going to ask her because I know she isn't going to tell me.
Thanks.

wage garnishment means a process granted by a court order by which a lender obtains, directly from an employer, part of the salary of an employee who is behind in payments to the lender.

She didn't pay a debt and they got a judgement against her so they can take it directly out of her paycheck. That's called Garnishment.

kveldulfgondlir
It means that the employere is taking extra money out for some expense, either money due the employer or to some city, county, state or federal governmental agency or debt collections service.

Unless you work for me...then it just means you get a nice sprig of parsley with your check...AAAAAHHHH..fargrent...

rrasimas@sbcglobal.net
She owes money to someone who has a secure loan in her name. The people in question must go before a judge and get a written authorization from the court to garnish her wages. The garnishment will continue until the loan is paid in full unless she pays the outstanding amount.

She has a big financial bill to pay. In order for her to pay this bill she has been ordered by a judge to have a certain amount of money taken out of her pay checks. This way they money is collected before the person actually cashes their check. This is done to ensure that the person pays instead of ditches their obligation. A lot of people who have not paid child support or theft, will have their checks garnished to pay the other parent or restition.

kim_in_craig
It means that she owes someone ( a creditor) some money so they can take up to 25% of a persons paycheck until it's payed off.

jazi
Wage garnishment is not something the employer does themselves.....it's usually from a court order. Your friend apparently owes money somewhere....it could be for back taxes, child support, a credit card debt....all depends on the judgement from the court.

could be a court fine or child support or a loan from the boss don't ask is best

Nani
It usually means that she was sued and lost. Child support is another reason for this. The courts send papers to the employers forcing the employer to take out wages and send to the courts. The courts will then send it to the person that won the case

?
It means that a court has placed a judgment against her wages. They usually deduct 25% of her total income

mstrywmn
The most common cause for this is unpaid child support.
