do you owe $ to the state for something else? like unpaid taxes? or are you behind in child support payments?

You will have to ask your employer. In California we have to notify the employee about any garnishment and then wait until the next pay period.

the garnishment is your employers bank via a court
order taking money right out of your check , usually
child support

it could be for past due child support or for the current month
ask your employer

It means either an attachment of an employee's wages in the hands of the employer to pay a creditor. Or a directive from a court or other related authority directed to a third party who owes money or property to a judgment debtor not to pay.
Glad I could help :)

If next to "garnishment 1" you saw a $$ figure and noticed that your whole paycheck was short, then your ex went through the court system and got your wages garnished directly out of your paycheck. She or he can do that by law if you're not paying child support, or meeting the requirements of the settlement. You'd have to check with your Payroll clerk for specifics because they had to have received paperwork in order to garnish your wages.

STEVEN F
Like MANY items on your paystub, the exact meaning is whatever your employer uses that designation for. It SOUNDS like the 1st garnishment from your check. I would guess it is for the child support, but you should ask your payroll department to be sure.

Whenever there is a line on your paycheck listing "garnishment" your employer has received from the courts or from child support services an order to withhold from your wages. You should have received a copy of the order. If you have misplaced it your Human Resource Department or the Payroll Department should have a copy on File. Your employer cannot stop withholding until the courts authorize them.
Garnishments can be for Child Support, Federal or State Income Taxes owed, Judgements against you. You need to verify the garnishment is valid.

Ron
Do you have any other Bill that you are behind on garnishment means that someone has taken you to Court and that Court has set a garnishment in order that they can get their money. hope this helps

Ask your HR person at work.

Sounds like they are garnishing your wages.

Are you supposed to pay child support or something?

Bill M
Garnishment means the money has been taken out of your paycheck because you didn't pay it voluntarily, or someone convinced a judge that you were delinquent. If you have been paying the correct amount on time, get the canceled checks and call your lawyer.
