What doesn't count as own support?
My daughter is now mad I claimed her as a qualifying child, she meets all the requirements, the point of the argument is she's paying for all her own stuff. She is speaking of things basically everything that has nothing to do with contributions to the household. What does Not count as own support. She also received financial aid because I could afford to pay for a college education. Could anyone help me to determine a little more in detail what does not count as own support. She even accused me of falsely claiming her.
Thanks so much guys.

Your paragraph says, "she also received financial aid because I COULD afford to pay for a college education". Did you mean to say "could not" afford to pay?
She sounds like she's still behaving as a child.

You should call H&R Block, have a tiny discussion with them, then relay the legal facts to your daughter.
When she's employed she can file her own taxes. By then you'll be charging rent, if she's still under your roof, she'll love that part of being grown up, eh?!

Anything that is spent by or for her is considered support. If she has a good income and spends it all on herself, she could very well be spending more on her support than you are. That is because support is defined as more than just a roof over her head, clothes, and groceries.

Things she gets:
-if she has a car and she insures and maintains and makes the payments
-clothes she buys
-personal care items she buys
-ipods, video games, etc. that young people spend a ton on

You get:
-the groceries that you buy
-the clothes you buy
-something for the roof over her head based on the fair market value of the rental value of your residence (even if you own it) divided by the number of people under that roof.

Whoever is paying for her schooling gets that

If her support of herself comes to more than 50% of support from her and you and all sources, then you CANNOT claim her and she should claim herself

I assume your daughter meets the age and residency requirements and that support is the only issue.

The money your child pays for her own things, even frivolous things, are considered support she provides herself. Amounts your child borrowed are considered support she provides herself. Pell grants and other need-based grants, but not scholarships, are considered support provided by your child.

If your child lives with you, your expenses of operating your home, and food eaten at home, are considered support. If you borrowed money and spent it for your child's education, that is support provided by you. You would figure the value of lodging at the rental value. Divide the household expenses by the number of persons in the home.

If your child provided over half of her own support, she is not your dependent.

The worksheet for you to figure this is on page 35 of the following document

http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p17.pdf

There are a few things that are specifically excluded from support, such as life insurance and funeral expenses. But I do not think that was the point of your question.

If she meets all the requirements, then you did nothing wrong. However, when she files her taxes, she will need to indicate on the form (mark the form or tell the person preparing it) that she was claimed on someone else's return.

It is pretty self-explanitory. However pays half of the overall support. That includes room and board and any other amounts directly for her benefit. You could be generous and give her some of the funds you got for claiming her. BTW, you are the only one qualified to take her. She has no choice.

Cat
Support includes:
Expenses on the house - mortgage payments, real estate taxes, or if you're renting, the rent. Utilities, electric, gas, water... Insurance (either homeowners, or renters). Health insurance, if you cover her. Food. If she doesn't have a car - then a portion of your car payment and insurance and gas - since without a car, she'd have to pay for bus or cab or her own car.

Add it all up. If it's just you and her living in the house - then HALF of everything (except maybe the car, if she doesn't use it much) is her portion of "support" as far as housing.

It's not that what she pays for "doesn't count" as support - it's just that what you pay is A LOT MORE than what she's paying, and therefore, you are providing over half her support.

If she's 18 or older - then there are additional rules. but if she's a minor - no question she's your dependent.

Well it depends on how old your daughter is. I think 19 is the cut off age. My parents stopped claiming me when I was 18 because I had my own job therefore could get my own tax return. If you need more info go to:
http://www.irs.gov/
It will tell you all the rules regarding dependents.

man behind blue eye's
not own support ? do you feed her ? house her? take her messages ? do you help her in ways she takes for grant ? does she realize you fed housed and clothed her for many years.in these times of economic troubles we all need to stick together and do what we must to get thru.i have a 15 year old daughter who thinks about the same thing.who helped them get started in life.thew first cell phone? the first car? they dont think of those things.

well as long as her residence is your residence you can claim her as a dependent, for her to be able to claim herself or you not claim her she needs to have her own full residence and not be in any higher education facility
