You won't like this, but I reckon it's best to just be honest. My brother has worked for the Inland Revenue for about 18 years, as has my sister, and they've heard EVERY single excuse under the sun. If you try and get out of it by spouting far-fetched garbage, they will have your head on a plate. (One of my relatives in Australia once listed his cats as dependents on his tax form, and got away with it, but I wouldn't recommend arsing around with the tax office.)
However, they're used to dealing with people who genuinely can't fill in forms for whatever reason, so if you tell them that and make it clear you're willing to pay, they may not hassle you or charge you a whopping fine. If you convince them that you're just hopeless at admin, they're less likely to come down hard.
When push comes to shove you need to cough up your hard earned cash, just like the rest of us have to! |

What about the good old, "I was going to pay my Taxes but the Taxi had a flat tyre, When I got into the bus, some varmint bombed it, luckily I escaped unscathed, minus all the tax papers.
The next day I just plain old forgot, The day after that my mother -in-law visited us, you know how stressful that could be dont you? Then the Wifey was sulking cos I grimaced while welcoming the MIL with outstretched arms as planned".

Unless you can prove reasons, and back them up with loads of paperwork, bog the buggers down, then I feel you are going to have to cough up, sorry but you have to prove reasons for not paying, they just send out estimated bill based on information available and historical situations similar from past records |
