What happen if dont pay council tax?

The Darkened Man
They will hunt you down and make you pay....

No joke the Council are an evil bunch of buggers, who want their cash/pound of flesh like no others......

Champagne 11 should be working
You will be prosecuted and made to pay it anyway.

foilwrapped2000
They'll make you pay it and probably take you to court.

Sal*UK
You will eventually be prosecuted and sent to jail.

De Mac
The council can evict you for none payment of council tax, it is classed the same as not paying your rent

If you are having prolems paying it go tot he local offices and talk to them before they talk to you as they look favourably on you being proactive, ecplain you circumstances and why you ahve problems and they will suprisingly help you.

You can get away with it for a few months, but will receive letters asking for the money. If you leave it too long you will be notified of the amount you owe, which will be a large sum, and threatened with legal action if you don't pay up. If you can't afford the total you owe then they will work out a monthly instalment which will be higher than the original monthly payments you weren't paying before. If you still refuse to pay, you could face prison.

The Bailiffs call and take the Council back my friend.

gypsy
Unlike other debts if you fail to pay Council Tax you can end up in prison. The council are obliged to try to help you resolve it but in the end you will have to pay. they can send in Bailiffs to remove goods from your home which would be sold to pay it off but if they don't raise enough that way you still have to pay the difference. If you go to jail over it the debt is still there when you come out. The thing to remember is that all these other actions cost money and the bill for all of it is added to your debt.
Go to CAB and see if they can sort out a scheme with the council for you. Whatever you do DON'T ignore any of the letters from the council. Get in touch with them and stay in touch so they can see you are trying to sort it.
One thing - baillifffs do not have a right of entry unless they have a warrant giving them the right to enter from the court. If they turn up on your doorstep do not let them put even one foot inside the door as if you do they have then been invited in and can carry on. As long as they don't get a foot in the door at any time then they have to go to a court and get a warrant and if this were the case they should be accompanied by a uniformed police officer.
Finally the most important thing - don't let it grind you down. Whatever happens your health is more important..

Bren
they will take u to court

floss0802
You will have to pay it. no matter what.

You will get a reminder letter and if you don't contact them then it goes to court for a liability order, you then have 14 days to contact the council and try and arrange payment. After 14 days they tehn pass the debt to a bailiffs company who are not nice and will try by all means possible to get you to part with money that you probably can't afford. If you manage to avoid the bailifs you will then get a letter saying the bailifs are giving the debt back to the council for them to review and possibly take you back to court and give you a prison sentance. if you go to prison you will still owe the money when you get out.

The thing is if you have just missed one / two payments don't fret but if you owe quite a bit the council can get quite tetchy about letting you pay in installments but i suppose every council will be different.

I think it depends in which country you live. In scotland the just arrest your wages and take it that way. Bailiffs do not exist in Scotland so they send you a court summons and you go to court and they tell you how much to pay. Never heard about anybody going to jail in scotland for not paying there council tax. In the end you have to pay no matter what even if you went bankrupt you would still have to pay.

they issue you with a bill.

You don't pay the bill, they issue you with a court summons or fine

you don't pay for those and the council tax and they take you to court and can put you in jail.

Bond 007
If you don't pay your Council Tax, everybody else has to pay your share.

Pay Up !!

JO-JO MOJO
Quite a lot of things, all bad i'm afraid like being taken to court and made to pay a fine and court costs, being placed on a bad debt list ( the consequences are you will not be able to get credit anywhere) the council can get a debt collection agency to chase you (they are worse than the mafia) send the bailiffs in to confiscate your stuff and auction it off for any price they can get and if they don't get enough to cover the bill come back for a second go of your goods and chattels. has that got you in a sweat yet??
