What happens if I actually FORGOT to file my tax return for 2006?
I calculated all the stuff and paid my fair share but filed an extension then forgot about it....OOOPS. Now, when thinking about the 2007 tax position, I couldn't find my 2006 return and think I actually forgot to send it in? What should I do?

1985 & going strong
You just file it now. You will likely be assessed a late filing penalty, but you won't pay as much as you would were you to wait until April 15th to file 2006 and 2007.

Don't worry. It probably happens more than you think. You actually have 3 years from the date the return is due to file.

Hope I helped. God bless you. †

Ask your employer for a copy and file your taxes. If you do not owe, you're fine. If you do owe, brace yourself for a penalty.

If you truly know you didn't file, file.
If you are not sure, call the IRS.

If you are getting a refund, no big deal as you only owe penalties and interest if you owe. (The absolute deadline for getting a refund on 2006 taxes is to file by 4/15/2010 or 10/15/2010 if you had an extension.)

Judy1
If you didn't pay in all you owe, you'll owe any interest or penalties. If you paid everything you owe, then you'll get a refund if you have one coming, and there won't be interest or penalties.

You could call the IRS and ask them if they received a return from you. But if you are pretty sure you didn't send it, then mail it now.

Send it in.

If you paid the money just file the return. The base the penalties on monies owed, therefore you shouldn't have any late fees.

Contact the IRS and tell them..they will walk you thru it. Fessing up now will be easier if you ignore it.

They will track you down and string you up..... kidding.... contact them first and document it. They will tell you what to do.

Of course all this will be moot when the FairTax Act H.R. 25 passes and replaces all income taxes with a single sales tax on new items. The FairTax now has the support of hundreds of thousands, 72 congressional sponsors / co-sponsors, and 7 presidential candidates. See www.fairtax.org

Get it in now! The interest and late fee meters are running as you read this. Eventually it will wipe out any refund you have and you will OWE THEM. They will catch up with you eventually. File your present return on New Years day if possible. I used to be a revenue agent for New Mexico Taxation and Revenue. Trust me, get clean with the IRS.

if you have a refund comming, it wont be a problem to file both '06 and '07 at the same time. However, if you owed taxes, you could be penalized severly with not just their fines, but interest is worse than a credit card payment!!!

they will penalize you and when you fill out your next taxes if you owed last year they will take it out of this year taxes.

Call the IRS now.
Trust me I am paying for not filing earnings in 05, and the interest on the charge is way greater than the charge. Sucks. Call em now!!!!

Rollover happens. which means you pay it now instead of last year and pay the interest gained.

oh i get it, instead of first contacting the IRS, you thought you come on here and try to find some happy loophole.

the old "i didn't pay taxes, so i don't owe them" defense doesn't work too well.

maybe you could convince the IRS you were doing some research to see if paying them or keeping the money would be more beneficial to the economy. they'll drop any late fees and hail you as a fiscal and monetary policy genius.

Heather Honey
oh man! you're gonna owe a lot! the penalty is a daily fee... find that return quick!

It is extremely important to file this year before it might be interpreted as a criminal act and invoke more severe penalities.
