What happens if I don't file my taxes?
Just wondering?

if you think you are special someone like me will likely come along one day and try to disabuse you of your thought. The penalties and interest can be quite expensive, assuming they don;t pursue you criminally - failure to file is a crime. IRS can pursue any asset you have an interest in, let alone your checking account.

selfmanagement808
depends on if you owe.
do not owe taxes - you become a non-filer
owe taxes - you become a deliquent filer
owe taxes and not intending to file - you become a tax protestor
owe taxes, not intending file or to pay - you become prisoner #1421168

That depends. If your income is below the filing threshold for your filing status, nothing at all will happen.

If you have a refund due, you'll lose out on it if you don't file.

If you owe, the IRS will eventually come looking for you and your tax debt. Since you didn't file there will be penalties for failure to file and interest on the total debt.

Please ignore the clown that claims there's no law that says you have to file or pay. Unless you want 3 hots and a cot from the government for your troubles.

Sometimes IRS files them for you and you will get hit with penalties. Don't let them have that chance.

Do enough information and what status, salary, etc. You may not need to file. You do not have to file for 3 years. If you do not mind the IRS figuring it out for you and interest and penalty.

Every year there are people who try to game you, pretending there is no law about filing taxes. They hope to get a large number of people distracting the IRS while their own illegal activities go unnoticed (they wish).

If you don't file, the IRS will take the income reported to them on your W-2, if it looks like you earned enough for tax to be due. If it's not on a W-2, and you won't report it, you will go to jail.

Surprisingly, for most working people, there is no actual law on the books requiring one to file for FEDERAL income taxes; but if one doesn't, one risks going to jail anyhow. So much for justice!

The question does not ask about ones responsibility to PAY taxes but rather whether one must FILE.

Under current law many working people who believe that it is illegal not to FILE are actually NOT required to file by any law of congress.

I concede that this is indeed 'splitting hairs', but nonetheless, it is the case!
