What happens if i don't pay my taxes for one year?

Hello, in that one year you will have to pay for the penalty of not filing your taxes on time then you will have to pay for your taxes on top of that.

My suggestion: if at all possible "file your taxes" If filing late can't be helped "file for an extension" this will give you more time to get the funds or forms you will need together, but at least you will be in the system as one who needs more time not a person who is trying to evade the IRS.

If a person doesn't file their taxes or sends in an extension......: check out the second link for more information on this.

They will send you several terse letters and the interest will add up very quickly. But you likely won't go to jail for just a year.

Well, if you owe taxes (in the US) and don't pay them, penalties are added and interest accrues. If you owe lots and lots of taxes and continue to evade paying them for years, you can actually do prison time for it, oh and the IRS loves seizing property!

mr_football2004
If you don't owe a significant amount, then it will be added to your taxes for next year. So if you get a refund the next year they will take the difference out of it for last years taxes. The government only come after you for taxes if you owe alot or get audited. You will get fined for not paying and get a toon of interest on your owed taxes

The government takes you out!

If you filed and didn't pay, the interest accumulate. If you didn't file and IRS finds out, the will still charge you back tax. If you communicate with them, you can set up a payment plan. They even take credit cards.

Most states you can skip 1 year But have to pay them the following year. At least this is what I remember a tax lady at H&R block told me.
Though the Government wants you to pay each year dont worry about it.
In MA I think you are allowed to make up to $8000.00 dollers a year and you do not have to claim taxes on it. Now I could be mistaken but each state also has a limit Like I just said where you do not have to claim the money you have earned if its UNDER a certain amount.

So if you missed last year just get your old W2 and file this year along with your new W2's.
If you cant find your old W2's then contact your old work place / place's and ask them to resend and you will pay for shipping or you can go pick them up when they have found them for you.

* Note * if you ever needed your old W2 forms from previous years go to your tax person, I know H&R block keeps them for so many years and you can have them make you copies for a small fee of all the years you need.

While you most likely won't go to jail for not paying your taxes for one year, this doesn't mean that you won't still owe. If you are an employee and receive a W-2, the IRS will also receive a copy of the W-2 and will know exactly how much you earned. If you don't file a tax return, you will be subject to penalties for late filing, as well as penalties for not paying and interest. Just the penalty for not paying is 5% per month. Adding on interest and late filing penalties, you can easily see your tax due double before a year has passed. You cannot erase back taxes through bankruptcy, so whether you like it or not, you can either voluntarily pay your taxes now or later, or the IRS can "force" you to pay by garnishing your wages, attaching your bank accounts, seizing your assets, etc.

They'll audit you (if they catch on), make you pay a fine and back taxes, and if you can't you'll go to jail.

Smart1
Did you not FILE or not pay taxes that you know that you owe?

ceaz
I just saw this website today... evidently there's no law requiring you to pay certain taxes. who knew?? although, I'm still going to pay mine... I don't need them putting me in jail right now... or taking any more money from me than they already have!
