Laura D | What happens if taxes have not been filed in 3 years? |
Additional Details I am assuming this will work in mine and my husband's favor. His ex-wife has not filed taxes for over 3 years, my stepson insists on living with us and I guess we won't "need" to take her to court since her days are numbered. :)

If you had income that would have required filing, you should be receiving a notice any time from the IRS that you either need to file, or they will estimate your tax based on the information they have and send you a bill. Believe me, it's better to file yourself than letting them estimate.
They have the option of prosecuting you, but they usually don't do that until you have actively refused to pay the taxes (as opposed to passively refusing by not filing). You will continue to rack up late filing fees, late payment fees, and interest on the amount due until you file and pay. |

Hey Laura,
Fess up and get it over with. Better than worrying about it for who knows how long and how are you gonna file taxes now? Don't admit anything they can't prove but gov. can be ruthless. might want to get a lawyer, just in case. |

It's actually a jailable offense to not file your tax returns.
If you're owed money, they won't likely bother you, because after 3 years, you lose all rights to collect those refunds.
If there's an error, they have 7 years to figure it out. I don't believe there's a time limit for them to collect on unfiled accounts though.
Time to suck it up and get them filed. If you owe and can't pay, they'll let you set up payment plans as long as 5 years. They're not so bad to work with if they see you're trying to get right with them. Dodging the IRS is always a bad idea in the long run though, and eventually it catches up to you. |

That's tax evasion and under the Bush administration they'll probably consider a crime against humanity. I would contact an IRS rep immediately and "come clean". Your going to get caught it's just a matter of time. The U.S. Government doesn't function so efficiently through deliquent payments and I.O.U.s. See if you can work out a plan with them, you will get audited and possibly charged with a crime but the sooner you act the better you will look in the courts eyes. Consult an attorney , hope this helps |
