What happens if you can't pay the IRS their money?
I recently found out I owe the IRS $650, but I'm living on welfare & can't afford it. Will they arrest me if I don't pay, or should I declare bankruptcy? I don't own a car or a house, & I have no credit cards or bank accounts.

To respond to "O Wise One", It's not that simple. I'm an Army veteran who is currently disabled & fighting to get Social Security right now insted of welfare. I'm not some low-life, like you might think. I have a shoulder being held together by a wire-type material, my ankle suffered serious damage, & I have hearing loss all from serving my country. I also suffer serious psychological problems from it. Sometimes War Veterans just don't get the respect they deserve.

In your situation I don't think they are going to arrest you. They will try to collect their money though. I'm sure they could go as far as garnishing your welfare if they wanted. Usually they will just try to get you on a payment plan. You don't need to declare bankruptcy because it costs a couple hundred dollars just to do that. Don't let it take over your life though. They have much bigger fish to fry. At least you didn't evade your taxes. Most people would just cheat on their taxes and hope they didnt get audited. But try avoiding having to pay anything to the irs by getting more withheld from your checks when you get a job. I hope this helps, and good luck to you, and I hope your financial situation gets better.

No they wont arrest you. $650.00 is not that big of a deal. What is the best step for you is too contact the IRS, explain your current financial situation to them. If they don't forgive the debt they will help to negotiate a settlement which is usually half of what is owed. Then they will put you on a payment plan which can be very easy, like $20.00 a month.

Talk to them, they are not as scary as people think.

Good Luck, but remember, don't put this off. The one way to get on their bad side is to avoid them.

No, don't panic - they will not arrest you. Just contact the IRS and explain your situation to them, and they should work out something. So long as you are upfront and honest with them, there should be a solution for you. Good luck and take care.

They won't arrest you or put you in jail...That would cost them money...All they want is money...Contact the IRS and they will work with you and put you on a payment plan.

650 DOLLARS!!!! Your so lucky you don't owe more fella, how would you like to owe 10,000.00$ Get out and get a job, pay them payments, and yes they will accept it and for ***** sake GET OFF OF WELFARE!!! Declare bankruptcy for 650 $? Get real!

Dont know, most times, if that happens, they garnish your wages when you have a job.

Contact the IRS. The worse thing you can do is just let your tax return sit there and not file it. If you can pay a little now when you file your tax return, file out Form 9465 Installment Agreement Request. The longer you hold onto your return, extra fees and penalty fees will be added on top of the $650. Like some have said, the IRS wants your money, but they are not going to spend a fortune to throw you in jail.
