gfierros1 | What happens if you dont file your taxes on time?? |
I was thinking it was gonna be a serious pain in the *** to file my taxes this year cuz i lived in 2 different places and worked at about 5 different places. Doesnt the IRS just send you a bill with a penalty?? If that's the case, I might just go with this option. Anyone know what happens or if I should just wait to get a bill? |

File your taxes. On time. The penalties can be severe.
1. Interest, compounded daily, is charged on any unpaid tax from the due date of the return until the date of payment. The interest rate is the federal short-term rate plus 3 percent.
2. In addition if didn't pay on time, you'll generally have to pay a late payment penalty of one-half of one percent of the tax (0.5%) owed for each month, or part of a month, that the tax remains unpaid after the due date, not exceeding 25 percent. |

If you owe and file late, you'll pay penalties. If you have a refund coming, then nothing will happen. |

You can file for an extension until August.
If you owe any tax, the amount must accompany the extension request.
If you owe tax and do not file, it may be as long a 1-2 years or so before it is discovered.
Penalties and interest are computed DAILY from the due date.
Don't do what you suggest. |

You can file an extension of time to file, granted automatically. However, you are required to pay any tax due, on time.
My advice is pull your stuff together and file--get it over and done with. There are penalties and interest for failure to timely file, or failure to pay tax when due. It makes what you owe grow quickly. |

Depends. If the IRS thinks that you are due a refund they'll happily keep quiet for 3 years and then just pocket it.
On the other hand if they think that you owe, they WILL send you a bill. The only problem with that is that it may take 18 to 24 months for them to get around to that. By then your debt will have nearly doubled with the penalties for failure to file and late payment of taxes plus interest are tacked on. Oh yeah, and when they do that, they'll figure the HIGHEST possible tax bill that they can come up with. Single, no dependents, no adjustments, no deductions, the whole lot.
You know the saying: You can pay me now or pay me (much more) later. The IRS pretty much lives by that mantra. |

If the IRS and any state(s) figure you are due a refund, they don't care if you file (they just keep your money until you do). You have up to 3 years from normal April filing date to file for a refund.
If you owe tax, you can file Form 4868 for an automatic extension. But you still have to pay any 2007 tax due by this April 15th, or you will get hit with interest and penalties. You have more than a month until then, why wait?
If you lived in more than one state there is likely a form with NR (non-resident) on it to pro-rate your state taxes for the amount of time you lived in each state. |

You can ask the IRS for an extension of time. |
|

It is better to file on time, if you can't then request an extension of time to file, you must pay if you owe with the extension. Never wait for IRS to file for you, the interest and penalties will kill you. IF IRS files for you they only claim one extemption, standard deduction and usually single.
And if you don't file on time you won't get the "Rebate". |

You get hit with late filing penalty, late payment penalty and interest. |
