laprietabella | What happens if you pay to use someone's kid for tax credit? |
Several people at my job are offering various people's children for tax credits for a price of $400-500. They provide SS# and other info. They get back a lot more than they would without a child. It's been offered to me but I want to know what the penalties are and what the chances are that it will be found out. Thank you. |

It's called tax fraud. The IRS takes this very seriously. Don't do it. The risk is too great that they will match names with the ss#. Not worth going to prison, is it? |

Well, that would be tax fraud, and if you get caught you could both go to jail. You mean other than that, what happens?
Most likely you would just end up having to pay back what you got for illegally claiming them, plus interest and penalties (fines), and if you got EIC for them, you'd be barred from filing for EIC for up to 10 years even if you legitimately qualified. |

That's tax fraud, a criminal offense. The IRS does make a few examples of those folks every year. They're claimping down hard on folks for this and returns are already being delayed for suspicious EIC claims. The odds of gettting caught are pretty good actually.
At the very least you'd have to pay back any ill-gotten gain plus penanties and interest. If if involved EIC fraud you'd be barred from EIC claims yourself for up to 10 years. |

That's tax fraud and you could get jail and penalties. There are child tax credits and additional child tax credits and EIC. BIG time trouble if found out. Sometimes they sell #s to more than one person, IRS rejects, asks for proofs. NEED relationship for most credits, or the child must have lived with you.
IRS is particularly increasing auditing of returns with EIC, particularly with children whose last names don't match the taxpayer.
Don't remember off-hand which penaties apply, but this is SERIOUS tax fraud. ALSO, the IRS has a hotline, which pays off people reporting those filing fraudulent returns. Better way to get money is by being a snitch than by committing tax fraud. |

Is this a rhetorical question?
This is tax fraud as others have stated.
And keep in mind that the child tax credit is a max of $1,000 per child, BUT is decreased depending on your income. So a Person with 3 children claimed will qualify for $3,000 in a refundable tax credit if their AGI is less than $60,000. But a person making $100,000 with 1 child probable can't take the credit. |
