What happens if you think there is a misprint on your W2 and you have already e-filed?
I noticed that on my W2 that the EIN number is the same as the state id number. I have already efiled my federal but not my state. Will the IRS reject it, and I have to amend it or will it affect only my state? I am going to call the company tomorrow and ask if it is correct although I am almost certain it is wrong because my W2 for last year shows a different number. Anyone else had this problem?
Additional Details
I think I need to clarify and say that my EIN is correct, and it is the state id number wrong.

Generally speaking, the IRS will take your figures and process your return. Within 2 years of filing your return (actually by 1 year), they will compare the W-2's filed by the company and sent to A) IRS and B) the State jurisdiction and compare the two..

If you amounts do not match your social security number, you will likely receive a notice that asks for you to clarify the discrepancy.

What you need to do is make sure that the employer's E.I.N. number is reported in the right place and your SS# is in the right place. Quite often, the State I.D. number is just the company's E.I.N.# which is used for State purposes and there is nothing for you to do. In fact, this is almost always the case in the State of NJ.

If the employer's E.I.N. number or your Social Security number is incorrect, you need to call the company and have them file an ammended W-2 to correct this error. However, you are not required to file an ammended return unless numerical numbers have changed for your salary or withholding amounts.

I hope this is helpful.

sharp eye there,

IRS will not care

it is possible that your state has changed its numbering system to conform to the Federal numbering system [the E.I.N.] and thus there is nothing to be corrected.

If there is something to be corrected, then waiting for a corrected W-2 before filing your state return may be very smart indeed.

the federal and state EIN's are not always different. I have seen alot of them that are the same.

It is possible that this situation could cause you some difficulty if it is in error. If the EIN number is not correct and you have e-filed the return may be rejected. On the other hand the company may have a new EIN number and this will not be an issue at all. In any case it is good that you are following up. Generally such a problem is not difficult to repair if properly detected and addressed.

the ein number for an employer doesn't change unless the employer actually created a different company. If the software gives you the option to resubmit your return after correcting the mistake use last year's w-2 ein number. the ein number should look like this **-********.

Some states use the Federal ID number as the state ID number.

A number of states use the FEIN as the SEIN. It's not your problem anyway, so don't worry about it. As long as the numbers match between your return and the W-2 as filed there won't be any problem at all. The IRS doesn't even look at the State information anyway.
