What if I don't pay my taxes and leave the country?
I was a student in the US for about an year. I stayed there basically from December 2006 to Feb 2008. I left US in Feb 2008 to go back to my home country (I was a non-resident in the US).

I worked for my university in this one year. I also did some work online that made me some good money. Since I left the US in Feb 2008, I didn't file my taxes.

What happens now? I haven't filed my taxes and I probably owe a decent sum to the IRS. I am not a resident or citizen of the US, so do I need to pay back the tax amount owed? And what if I don't pay? Am I liable to get arrested?

Also, how will it impact my ability to travel? Can I travel to the US (and other countries) and not be liable to get arrested?

I was 19 when I left the US, so I wasn't really too acutely aware of tax problems. If required, I wouldn't mind paying any owed taxes.
Additional Details
Thanks for the responses. I wouldn't mind paying the taxes. Will get in touch with an advisor and work out how much I ow and file this fiscal year. Whatever I didn't pay was because of ignorance, not malice

Okay, you are not in as deep of a problem as you think.
The IRS is stretched too thin that they rarely audit, let alone go after someone who did not file their taxes.
I know people who have not filed taxes for years, and some who scam the system year after year and they get by. Now I don't encourage you to do either.
If you still have the W-2 forms, file the taxes and get it done with. Worst case scenario at this point is that you pay some extra for interest that would have accured on the money you did not pay.
You might not owe as much as you think, as online transactions are loosely regulated and most don't need to be filed (if you did not receive a W-2, you do NOT need to file that income). For example, no one who sells on ebay (unless you are a registered company) pays income on the profit they make.

Anyway, I am including an IRS link that will give you instructions/directions on how to go about filing your delinquent tax returns. That is the credible IRS governmental website with the real information you need.

Penalty for Failure to File Income Tax Return Increased

If you do not file your return by the due date (including extensions) you may have to pay a failure-to-file penalty. For income tax returns required to be filed after 2008, the failure-to-file penalty for returns filed more than 60 days after the due date (including extensions) is increased. In this situation, the minimum penalty is the smaller of $135 or 100% of the unpaid tax.

Just stay out of the U.S. and you will be OK... but if you come back... which you MAY NOT BE ABLE TO DO... you will get hit with TAXES, PENALTIES AND INTEREST which will make every dollar you OWED look like $3 you will have to pay

Why not just file your taxes and not worry about it?If you know you owe it pay.
You seem to like the U.S. enough to come here frequently so are you too good to obey the law?

File you tax returns and play safe.
You may not owe what you are thinking. Normally, employers withhold sufficient taxes. Also you may get treaty deduction based on your visa and citizenship.

Don't listen to the previous two answers. They're just being mean. Considering that the American economy is in such a bad state, it would be beneficial to American tax payers if you payed what was owed. I believe international students do have to pay taxes if they've worked in the US.

I don't think you'll get arrested, the US government wouldn't go through all that trouble to have you arrested for whatever amount you owe, besides it would probably cost a great deal more than what you owe to have you shipped back here.

Try out this site. Hopefully it will solve your problems. Good luck!
