What is your situation? The IRS will want to determine if

-there is a hardship situation, that you don't have enough to meed necessary living expenses. They will want to take a 433-A (for individuals) for financial disclosure to verify expenses.

-there is actually some amount of money you can pay per month. They might set up a payment plan. If, as an individual, you don't owe "too much,: just suggesting a payment plan that will pay off in less than 5 years should be accepted. If it is a bit more than that, they will also want a 433-A

-If it is an amount you can never pay off, and you have generous relatives or something that will help out, you might want to do an offer in compromise. Good points: if it is accepted, that's it. Finished. Bad points: it costs $150 non-refundable, about 20% are accepted, and it extends the time the IRS can try to collect.

You can set up a monthly payment plan.

Call the IRS and set up payment arrangements: 800-829-7650. Setting up payment arrangements will stop some of the penalties (not the interest). The sooner you start paying the less interest and penalties will be applied.

You set up a payment plan and pay them every month
and deep paying them until you pay them off, with penalties and interest
it's much better to talk with them and work it out than for them to find you and TAKE it

Ms. Angel..
Call and request an installment agreement. Call 1-800-829-0922; 1-800-829-8374 or 1-800-829-7650 to set up the installment agreement.
IRS does charge a one time USER FEE of $105.00you mail in your monthly payment) to set up the installment or $52.00(automatic withdrawal from your checking account) for a direct debit installment agreement; or you could qualify for the reduced user fee of $43.00 IRS will let you know if you qualify.
Or download form 9465 Installment Agreement and mail to appropriate address. IRS will let you know by mail if your agreement was accepted. The minimum payment IRS accept for balances up to $1,499.00 is $25.00. $50.00 for $1,500 to $3,000.00 and interest and penalties continue to accrue until your balance is full paid.
Visit IRS website www.irs.gov for more information on installment agreements.

If you owe less than $25,000 and can pay it off within five years, IRS will grant you an installment agreement without any hassles. If you can't pay within five years or owe more than $25,000, you will have some hoops to jump through to resolve the case.

If you can not pay what you owe without being forced into a hardship, as defined by IRS, your account can be put on the back burner until your financial situation improves.

If you will never be able to pay what you owe and have access to some funds (an advance on an inheritance or "loan" form the Bank of Mom & Dad) you may qualify for an offer in compromise--the "pennies on the dollar" deal you have probably seen ads for on Cable TV. As a practical matter, you would have to owe a considerable amount to go this route. Stay away from the As Seen on TV people, they promise a lot (or want you to think so) and charge outrageous fees.

Putting your head in the sand does not help. By all means, take care of your case before it gets to the point of a threat of a levy on your wages. It gets much more difficult after that.

Contact them to start up installment payments - and don't miss those payments once you start them. Once you owe for long enough, they can and will start coming after your assets - bank accounts, car, house, etc. so you are better off paying what you can. And do it ASAP since you are incurring penalties and interest every month that you are behind.

they can come up with a payment plan for you.just make sure you call them and set it all up.don't make them come looking for you.

kate
They garnish your wages or put a lien on anything you own of value .

A co-worker had about 20% of his check taken for 3 years .
( on top of his regular tax deduction )
Their computers can track you the rest of your life and taxes are NOT dismissed in bankruptcy .
